Report of the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

1.\t<\/span>In its resolution <\/span>49\/148<\/a> of 23 December 1994, the General Assembly, <\/span>inter alia<\/u><\/span>, requested the Commission on Human Rights to continue to give special attention to the violation of human rights, especially the right to self-determination, resulting from foreign military intervention, aggression or occupation, and requested the Secretary-General to report on this question to the General Assembly at its fiftieth session under the item entitled "Right of peoples to self-determination".<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

2.\t<\/span>The present report contains a summary of action taken by the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-first session on this question.<\/p><\/div>\n

3.\t<\/span>At its fifty-first session, held from 30 January to 10 March 1995, the Commission on Human Rights considered the item entitled "The right of peoples to self-determination and its application to peoples under colonial or alien domination or foreign occupation" at its 4th to 7th and 29th meetings.  The debates are reported in the relevant summary records (E\/CN.4\/1995\/SR.4-7 and 29).  The report on the fifty-first session of the Commission on Human Rights is contained in document E\/1995\/23-E\/CN.4\/1995\/176 and Corr.1 and 2.<\/p><\/div>\n

4.\t<\/span>Under this agenda item, the Commission adopted four resolutions, which related to the situation in occupied Palestine (<\/span>1995\/4<\/a>), the use of mercenaries as a means of impeding the exercise of the right of peoples to self-determination (1995\/5), the Middle East peace process (<\/span>1995\/6<\/a>) and the question of Western Sahara (1995\/7).<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
