of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General<\/u><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I am instructed by the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, which has the powers and responsibilities of the Provisional Government of Palestine, to bring the following to your immediate attention:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Today, 19 January 1990, Mr. Faisal Husseini, one of the prominent Palestinian peace activists and President of the Arab Studies Society, was arrested by the Israeli military occupier.  Mr. Husseini was assaulted by Israeli settler Noam Federman as police were taking him to court Friday morning.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>It is important to mention that various restrictions have been imposed against Husseini for many years by Israel, the occupying Power, one of which was a town arrest order renewed nine consecutive times from February 1982 to February 1987.  He was also placed in administrative detention four times between April 1987 and January 1989.  Furthermore, he was given a three-month order early in January 1990 banning him from travelling and most recently came his arrest on 19 January 1990.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Mr.Husseini is a well-known advocate of a peaceful and negotiated settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli issue, based upon the establishment of a Palestinian State.  His arrest is a clear indication of Israel's disinterest in achieving a peaceful solution to the conflict and is widely considered a blow to any peace efforts.  It is typical Israeli behaviour, namely, to resort to violent and extreme action in resolving issues rather than conceding the fact that the solution to the conflict is a peaceful one.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>We urge the international community to take immediate action in order to stop such dangerous actions by Israel, the occupying Power, demanding Mr. Husseini's immediate release and a halt to his systematic harassment.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>We should be grateful if you would arrange to have the text of the present letter circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under the items entitled "The situation in the Middle East", "Question of Palestine" and "Comprehensive review of the whole question of peace-keeping operations in all their aspects", and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n
