I have the honour to transmit herewith a letter dated 6 April 1988, addressed to Your Excellency by the Permanent Observer of the Palestine Liberation organization to the United Nations.<\/p><\/div>\n

I kindly request you to circulate this letter as a document of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n

Letter dated 6 April 1988 from the Permanent Observer of the Palestine Liberation Organization<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

I am instructed by Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization to bring the following to your immediate attention. After Friday worship on 1 April 1988, Sheikh Saad Eddin El-Alami, Head of the Supreme Islamic Council was attacked by Israeli soldiers as he made his way out of the Mosque. Sheikh El-Alami was beaten on his back with an "instrument", as well as pushed and knocked about by Israeli soldiers. Palestinian worshipers rescued Sheikh El-Alami and took him home where a physician was called to examine his injuries. It was decided that he should be transferred to the Al Maqased hospital for a thorough medical examination, whereupon he was admitted for treatment of the injuries sustained. Sheikh El-Alami remains hospitalized today.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Palestine Liberation Organization considers this deliberate attack on a religious leader a serious provocation as well as an additional symptom of the ongoing Israeli brutalization of the Palestinian people under occupation, which has now been extended to physical attacks on members of the clergy.<\/p><\/div>\n
