I.    INTRODUCTION<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

1.\t<\/span>At its 3rd plenary meeting, on 24 September 1993, the General Assembly, on the recommendation of the General Committee, decided to include in the agenda of its forty-eighth session the item entitled "United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East" and to allocate it to the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

2.\t<\/span>The Fourth Committee considered the item at its 18th, 19th and 23rd to 27th meetings, on 15, 18, 29 and 30 November and 8 December (see A\/C.4\/48\/SR.18, 19 and 23-27).  The general debate on the item took place at the 18th and 19th meetings, on 15 and 18 November.<\/p><\/div>\n

6.\t<\/span>At the same meeting, the representative of Norway, in his capacity as Rapporteur of the Working Group on the Financing of UNRWA, introduced the report of the Working Group (see A\/C.4\/48\/SR.18).<\/p><\/div>\n

7.\t<\/span>At the 19th meeting, on 18 November, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA made a concluding statement (see A\/C.4\/48\/SR.19).<\/p><\/div>\n

8.\t<\/span>At the 27th meeting, on 8 December, the Permanent Observer of Palestine made a statement (see A\/C.4\/48\/SR.27).<\/p><\/div>\n

II.  CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSALS<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

9.\t<\/span>At its 27th meeting, on 8 December, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) had before it 13 draft resolutions, as set forth below.<\/p><\/div>\n

A.  Draft resolution A\/C.4\/48\/L.20<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

10.\t<\/span>At the 27th meeting, on 8 December, the representative of Belgium, on behalf of the European Union, introduced a draft resolution entitled "Assistance to Palestine refugees" (A\/C.4\/48\/L.20), sponsored by Belgium, Denmark, France,<\/u> Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg<\/u>, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain<\/u> and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland<\/u>.<\/p><\/div>\n

15.\t<\/span>At the 27th meeting, on 8 December, the representative of Sweden introduced a draft resolution entitled "Assistance to persons displaced as a result of the June 1967 and subsequent hostilities" (A\/C.4\/48\/L.22), which was finally sponsored by Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada<\/u>, the Comoros, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malaysia<\/u>, the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan<\/u>, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sweden<\/u> and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland<\/u>.<\/p><\/div>\n

17.\t<\/span>At the 27th meeting, on 8 December, the representative of Indonesia introduced a draft resolution entitled "Offers by Member States of grants and scholarships for higher education, including vocational training, for Palestine refugees" (A\/C.4\/48\/L.23), which was finally sponsored by Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam<\/u>, the Comoros, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mali<\/u> and Pakistan<\/u>.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t\t<\/span>"Alarmed<\/u> by the reports received from the Commissioner-General that the Israeli occupying authorities, in contravention of the obligation of Israel under international law, persist in their policy of demolishing shelters occupied by refugee families,<\/p><\/div>\n

\t\t<\/span>"1.\t<\/span>Strongly reiterates its demand<\/u> that Israel desist from the removal and resettlement of Palestine refugees in the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967 and from the destruction of their shelters;<\/p><\/div>\n

\t\t<\/span>"2.\t<\/span>Requests<\/u> the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East to address the acute situation of the Palestine refugees in the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967 and accordingly to extend all the services of the Agency to those refugees;<\/p><\/div>\n

\t\t<\/span>"3.\t<\/span>Requests<\/u> the Secretary-General, in cooperation with the Commissioner-General, to resume issuing identification cards to all Palestine refugees and their descendants in the occupied Palestinian territory, irrespective of whether or not they are recipients of rations and services of the Agency;<\/p><\/div>\n
