Letter dated 12 February 1980 from the Permanent Representative of<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>I have the honour to draw your attention to the letter of 30 January 1980 addressed to you by the representative of Jordan (A\/35\/81-S\/13772) and to state the following.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>There is no truth whatsoever to the lurid horror story conjured up in that letter with regard to the refugee camp at al-Dhaisheh near Bethlehem.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The facts of the case are simple.  On 25 December 1979 a public bus and a local ambulance were attacked with stones near the refugee camp in question.  Following those incidents a brief curfew was placed on the camp (from 0130 hours to 0530 hours on 26 December 1979).  The reason for the curfew was explained to the residents of the camp, and 20 persons were detained for purposes of the investigation into the stone-throwing incidents of the previous day.  No one was beaten; on one was dragged; and no one was injured.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>Given Jordan’s unceasing hostility towards Israel, and its deplorable record with regard to the residents, refugees and non-refugees alike, of Judea and Samaria during its illegal occupation of those areas from 1948 to 1967, its letter under reference must be seen for what it is – yet another attempt to manipulate not only the means and machinery of the United Nations but also, in this case, the emotive and highly-charged question of the Palestinian Arab refugees in Jordan’s relentless political warfare against Israel.<\/p><\/div>\n

Given the facts, the letter by the representative of the Palestinian Arab State of Jordan is the height of political deceit and hypocrisy.  It will no doubt be dismissed as such.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I have the honour to request that this letter be distributed as an official document of the General Assembly, under the items entitled “The situation in the Middle East” and “United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East”, and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n
