QUESTION OF THE VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

OCCUPIED ARAB TERRITORIES, INCLUDING PALESTINE<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Letter dated 8 January 2001 from the Permanent Observer for Palestine<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

to the United Nations Office at Geneva addressed to the<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>In grave violation of the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the human rights standards affirmed by the two international human rights covenants, the Charter of the United Nations and international conventions, mainly the Convention on the Prevention and the Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, and also in their determination to persist in their crime of aggression, their flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, the Israeli occupation forces, backed by gangs of settlers, persist in their criminal war against the Palestinian people, using all forms of deliberate killing, international assassinations, daily shelling of houses, hospitals, schools and ambulances with rockets and tanks shells, in addition to the military siege of towns and villages, the closure of roads between towns, crossing points and the airport, the demolition of houses, the imposition of collective punishments on the Palestinian people, causing severe corporal harm to thousands of Palestinians, which result in permanent handicap, collective detentions without trial, land confiscation, the establishment of bypass roads through the Palestinian territory, the establishment of new Israeli settlements, cutting communication between Palestinian localities and isolating them militarily from each other.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>Hereafter is a table with the statistics of the material and human losses as a result of the continued Israeli aggression during the period from 29 September 2000 to 29 December 2000.*<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

The martyrs<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

The number of martyrs reached 382, 145 of them were under the age of 18 years old.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

2<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

The Wounded<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

The number of wounded reached 16445, 5439 of them were children, 1511 were in serious condition and 976 suffer partial or total handicap<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

3<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Imprisonment<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

2576 persons were arrested, 293 of them were from Jerusalem, 1189 were workers inside the Greenline and the 669 others were arrested inside the Palestinian territory<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

\n

Economic losses<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

The total economic losses in all sectors, and the damage which affected the infrastructure, property, the rehabilitation of the wounded and the families of the martyrs due to the Israeli military machine reached 2,37 milliard dollars<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

5<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Uprooted trees<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

56832 trees were uprooted<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

6<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Bulldozed lands<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

9888 Dunums of land were bulldozed, 6774 of which in Gaza and the remaining 3114 in the West Bank<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

7<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Damaged buildings<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

3669 buildings were damaged, 839 in Gaza, 226 of which totally demolished, and 2883 in the West Bank, 233 of which totally demolished.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

8<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Car destruction<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

102 ambulances were damaged, 21 of which completely destroyed.  Three ambulance drivers were killed as well as the German Doctor Fischer.  145 Emergency medical staff sustained various injuries, some of them were doctors.  862 private cars were damaged, 309 of them completely destroyed in addition to 40 motorcycles.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

9<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Demolition of business establishments<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

204 stores and business firms were demolished and burnt<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\n

10<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

Others<\/p>\n<\/td>\n

\n

4070 meters of wall that serve as foundations for buildings were destroyed in addition to 259 plastic houses and 40 livestock farms.  38 new bypass roads were built and the Israeli Government will build 39603 housing units in the settlements established in the West Bank.  4572 Dunums of land were bulldozed to expand some settlements in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.  29 mosques were damaged and burnt.  6 churches were burnt and 7 others damaged, among them one synagogue in Nablus<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
