\t<\/span>I have the honour to transmit herewith a letter addressed to you by His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Esmat Abdel Meguid, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt (see annex).<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I kindly request you to circulate this letter and its annex as an official document of the General Assembly, under the items entitled "Question of Palestine" and "The situation in the Middle East", and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I have the honour to communicate to you herewith the text of President Mubarak's Peace Initiative on the situation concerning the occupied territories in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.<\/p><\/div>\n

President Mubarak's Peace Initiative – January 1988<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The tragic events in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip confirm the urgency of resuming the peace process in the interest of all the parties concerned. In order to pave the way for meaningful <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

negotiations, we propose the following:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>The parties concerned would halt all forms of violence and repression in the occupied territories for six months; such a step would be accompanied by the following:\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t1.\t<\/span>Ceasing all settlement activities.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t2.\t<\/span>Respecting the political rights and freedoms of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t3.\t<\/span>Ensuring the safety and protection of this people through proper international mechanisms.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t4.\t<\/span>Movement towards the Convening of the International Peace Conference with the aim of reaching a comprehensive peace settlement that provides for the recognition of the right of all the States in the region to live in peace and for enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination.\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n
