Identical letters dated 5 June 2008 from the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

I write to inform you of a deadly Palestinian terrorist attack which killed one Israeli civilian.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Earlier this morning, a 52-year old man was killed after a mortar shell fired from the northern Gaza Strip landed in Kibbutz Nir Oz in Israel. Two others were seriously wounded, two more sustained shrapnel wounds and mild injuries and several others suffered from shock. The terrorist organization Hamas has claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p><\/div>\n

It should be noted that today’s attack took place following another assault on the Nahal Oz crossing yesterday. Palestinian terrorists fired mortars at the fuel depot, prompting the IDF to cease transferring industrial fuel, cooking gas and diesel to the territory. The rocket hit the Gaza side of the crossing and critically wounded a Palestinian worker. As the worker’s condition deteriorated, Israel evacuated him to a hospital in Ashkelon.<\/p><\/div>\n

The killing of an Israeli civilian this morning and the attack on Nahal Oz yesterday underscore the malicious and murderous intentions of Hamas. It is a terrorist organization that has no compassion or concern for civilians, neither Israeli nor Palestinian. Hamas’ commitment to violence and disregard for the Palestinian people are reminders that it has no interest in peace nor is it suited for engagement with the international community.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Israel will not stand idly by as its citizens are subjected to indiscriminate and lethal rocket attacks. Israel will defend itself, as any other nation would, in accordance with its inherent right under Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations. At the same time, Israel facilitates the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip, even while attacks continue from that territory. Despite yesterday’s attack, over 70 humanitarian trucks carrying fruit, fish and other humanitarian supplies were transferred to Gaza via the Sufa and Erez crossing points.<\/p><\/div>\n

I should be grateful if you would have the present letter circulated as a document of the sixty-second session of the General Assembly, under agenda items 17 and 18 and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n
