1.\t<\/span>In its resolution 51\/84 of 16 December 1996, the General Assembly, inter alia<\/i>, requested the Commission on Human Rights to continue to give special attention to the violation of human rights, especially the right to self-determination, resulting from foreign military intervention, aggression and occupation, and requested the Secretary-General to report on this question to the Assembly at its fifty-second session under the item entitled Right of peoples to self-determination.<\/p><\/div>\n

2.\t<\/span>The present report contains a summary of action taken by the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty-third session, held from 10 March to 18 April 1997, on this question.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

3.\t<\/span>At that session, the Commission on Human Rights considered agenda item 7, entitled The right of peoples to self-determination and its application to peoples under colonial or alien domination or foreign occupation, together with item 4, entitled The question of the violation of human rights in the occupied Arab territories, including Palestine, at its 3rd to 9th and 26th meetings, from 11 to 14 and on 26 March 1997.1<\/u>\/ An account of the Commissions consideration of the items is contained in the relevant summary records.2<\/u>\/<\/p><\/div>\n

4.\t<\/span>Under agenda item 7, the Commission adopted three resolutions on: the situation in occupied Palestine (resolution 1997\/4), the question of Western Sahara (resolution 1997\/5) and the Middle East peace process (resolution 1997\/6).<\/p><\/div>\n
