\t<\/span>I have the honour to transmit herewith the text of a statement issued on 24 November 1989 by a spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan on the assassination of President Moawad of Lebanon (see annex).<\/p><\/div>\n

Statement issued on 24 November 1989 by a spokesman<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

of the Foreign Ministry of Japan<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

1.\t<\/span>The Government of Japan wishes to express to the people of the Republic of Lebanon its sincere condolences at the news of the assassination of President René Moawad.  It condemns such an act of violence, which tramples down the efforts made by the Tripartite Supreme Arab Committee, the Lebanese parliamentarians and all those concerned for a settlement of the Lebanese problem, thereby damaging the process of peaceful settlement which was about to bear fruit.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

2.\t<\/span>The Government of Japan strongly hopes that the Lebanese people will surmount this tragedy with courage and determination and continue making efforts toward the earliest possible restoration of peace, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, based on the Charter of National Reconciliation adopted recently by the Lebanese Parliament.  The Government of Japan supports such efforts made by all the Lebanese people.<\/p><\/div>\n
