 The Palestinian cause and quest for statehood are high on the agenda here in New York, and rightly so. The present regional context reminds us all, including the two parties, that direct political peace negotiations must now be resumed. Within a specific time frame, they must produce a lasting peace and an end to conflict based on the two-State solution, with both States living side by side in peace and security.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

  <\/span>The President<\/strong><\/span> (<\/span>spoke in Arabic<\/i><\/span>): Now that we have come to the end of the general debate of the sixty-sixth session of the General Assembly, permit me to express my sincere gratitude for members’ participation in this open, constructive and comprehensive dialogue among world leaders.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 We have also witnessed the renewed hope and determination of the Palestinian people. In a truly historic moment, President Mahmoud Abbas announced that he had submitted an application to the Secretary-General for Palestine’s admission to the United Nations. The Security Council is now considering the issue, and the General Assembly will follow suit if that is what Member States decide. <\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 In general, I have been impressed by the fact that a majority of international leaders have called for a just and comprehensive peace settlement in the Middle East aimed at establishing two viable, sovereign and independent States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. Building on that consensus among nations, it is my hope that at this session we will be able to mobilize our efforts for a comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict, in accordance with the terms of reference and international law.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to conclude its consideration of agenda item 8?<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
