{"id":179884,"date":"2002-04-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T20:55:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?p=179884"},"modified":"2019-03-11T20:55:45","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T20:55:45","slug":"auto-insert-179884","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/auto-insert-179884\/","title":{"rendered":"NAM recommendation for the Security Council to visit Israel and Palestine &#8211; SecCo debate &#8211; Letter from South Africa\/Chairman of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:center;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>Letter dated 5 April 2002 from the Permanent Representative of South Africa<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:center;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><strong>to the United Nations addressed to the President of the Security Council<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\" style=\"white-space:pre; font-size:smaller\">\t<\/span>I have the honour to refer to the open debate on the situation in the Middle East that took place in the Security Council on 3 April 2002, where virtually all participants stressed the importance of ensuring the immediate implementation of Security Council resolutions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/pdfs\/A6205D0F6A75F92C85256B8E00542B01.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:justify;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">1402 (2002)<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">&nbsp;and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unispal.un.org\/pdfs\/4721362DD7BA3DEA85256B7B00536C7F.pdf\" style=\"color:#0000ff;text-align:justify;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">1397 (2002)<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">. During this debate, speakers expressed profound distress at the unprecedented levels of violence in the region, which constitutes a threat to international peace and security. Several delegations expressed fears that neighbouring States would be drawn into a wider conflagration and that the rage in the capitals of Arab States would boil over in response to the latest military operations in the Occupied Territory, including Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"color:#000000;text-align:justify;padding-top:11px;font-size:11pt;font-family:Times New Roman, serif;\">\n<p style=\"margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;\"><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\" style=\"white-space:pre; font-size:smaller\">\t<\/span>In my capacity as Chairman of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, I have the honour to remind the Council of the recommendation already made by some of its members that the Security Council visit Israel and Palestine at the earliest possible opportunity.
