In Liberia, 1.5 million persons had been forced to move and 800,000 had fled to neighbouring countries. In Sudan, the number of displaced persons had increased constantly in 1995, while the number of refugees in Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia had also risen sharply. Displaced persons in Burundi represented 10 per cent of the total population. Such mass exoduses were due in most cases to internal conflicts. Most of the displaced persons were women with young children.
