PERMANENT MISSION OF LEBANON TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO<\/p><\/div>\n

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Upon instructions of my Government and following the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for a further period of six months, I wish to express the gratitude of Lebanon for the unrelenting efforts made by the Secretary-General and his assistants, and sacrifices made by the UNIFIL – troops, command and administrators – towards the implementation of Security Council resolution 425 (1978).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Our gratitude extends also to the troop contributing countries, whose commitment to the cause of international peace made the establishment and continuation of UNIFIL possible.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Eleven years after its inception, 164 members of the force have lost their lives:  they belonged to various contributing countries, and more recently to the Irish, Norwegian and Swedish contingents.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The Government of Lebanon wishes to pay tribute to the memory of the members of the force to sacrificed their lives in the service of the noble ideals of the United Nations.  As a gesture of homage and gratitude to those valiant men, I wish to convey to you the intention of the Lebanese Government to build a monument that would serve as a permanent reminder of their valour and utmost sacrifice for the cause of international peace.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span><\/span>I should be grateful if you would have this letter circulated as a document of the Security Council.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
