THE SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST<\/p><\/div>\n

Letter dated 11 February 1980 from the Permanent Representative of<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Further to my letter of 8 February 1980 (A\/35\/90-S\/113785), I wish to draw your urgent attention to yet another attempt by the terrorist PLO at indiscriminate murder in Israel.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>At 0640 hours this morning, 11 February 1980, an explosive device went off near the bus station in Petah Tikvah, a town to the east of Tel-Aviv.  Twelve people were injured, one of them seriously.  In the vicinity, another explosive device and a hand grenade were discovered, which were dismantled by the police, thus averting further tragedy.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>Within hours, the news agency run by the PLO in Beirut boasted of its responsibility for this outrage (according to Reuters from Damascus).<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>This incident too is characteristic of the PLO’s cowardly practice of attacking indiscriminately civilian targets in teeming public places, a practice calculated to cause maximum havoc.  In these circumstances, the Government of Israel is duty-bound, as I have indicated in previous letters, to take all measures necessary to protect the lives and safety of its citizens.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I have the honour to request that this letter be circulated as an official document of the General Assembly, under the item entitled “The situation in the Middle East”, and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n
