Letter dated 26 July 2001 from the Permanent Representative of Israel<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>I wish to draw your attention to the latest Israeli casualty in the ongoing Palestinian terrorist campaign against Israel.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>On the morning of 24 July 2001, the body of Yuri Gushchin, an 18-year-old Israeli boy from the Jerusalem neighbourhood of Pisgat Ze’ev, was found in the Palestinian-controlled town of Ramallah. Palestinian security officials turned over Gushchin’s body, which showed signs of both gunshot and stab wounds, to Israeli officials. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Battalions, a Palestinian terrorist group associated with Chairman Yasser Arafat’s own Fatah faction, claimed responsibility for the murder.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>To date, 135 Israelis have been killed since the onset of hostilities in late September 2000.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>These attacks also come as Israel is continuing to exercise restraint in an effort to adhere to the principles of the Tenet ceasefire. This policy persists despite ongoing Palestinian attacks. Since the Tenet ceasefire went into effect, there have been over 700 separate attacks in which 16 Israelis have been killed and 75 wounded. The Palestinians have yet to undertake significant and concerted action to prevent such attacks in fulfilment of their obligations under the terms of the ceasefire.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>Israel again calls on the Palestinian leadership to strictly adhere to the terms of the ceasefire as well as the numerous other commitments it has made to renounce the use of violence and terrorism and to pursue political aims through a peaceful process of dialogue.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n
