\t<\/span>Pre-dawn yesterday (Palestine time), Israeli tanks and bulldozers moved into an area under Palestinian control near the Palestinian town of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. Israeli tanks, supported by helicopter gunships, shelled Palestinian buildings, including seven police posts, killing five Palestinian policemen and one Palestinian civilian and injuring many others, some critically. Israeli bulldozers flattened farmland as well as several Palestinian homes and buildings. The Israeli incursion and shelling caused many inhabitants in the area to flee their homes in fear.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>This new crime, the occupying Power claims, came in response to an earlier attack committed by two Palestinians against an illegal Israeli settlement in the area, during which two settlers were killed. Israeli occupying forces, however, charged the house in which the attackers were, killing both of them. For its part, the Palestinian Authority issued an immediate statement condemning the attack, stating that it would arrest those responsible, and reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire. The Palestinian Authority did that in spite of its firm position regarding the illegality of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, and the criminal behaviour of the illegal settlers against the Palestinian people.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>The above-mentioned Israeli crime once again indicates what we have mentioned in our previous letters to you since the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement between President Yasser Arafat and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. In fact, the Israeli Government and Israeli occupying forces not only have not implemented their part of the agreement but have in actuality increased their oppressive measures against the Palestinian people, resulting in the killing of 27 Palestinians since the conclusion of that agreement. Israeli actions as well as statements made by Israeli officials all indicate the unwillingness of the Government to proceed with a ceasefire and the implementation of the Mitchell recommendations towards the resumption of negotiations on a final settlement.<\/p><\/div>\n
