THE SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST<\/p><\/div>\n

Letter dated 25 June 1999 from the Permanent Representative<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

of Lebanon to the United Nations addressed to the <\/u>Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

\t<\/span>On instructions from my Government, and further to my earlier letter dated 24 June 1999 concerning the recent Israeli attacks against Lebanon, I have the honour to inform you that at dawn (Beirut time) Israeli aircraft bombed an electric power station at Arb Salim, as well as several bridges connecting the southern region to Beirut and certain bridges linking the southern areas.  This very serious situation may indicate that Israel intends to intensify its aggression or to invade Lebanon; at the same time, it exacerbates tension and undermines economic activity as summer approaches.  The latest reports mention that 13 people were killed and about 84 people injured; and that the following bridges, connecting the south to Beirut, were destroyed by Israeli aircraft bombing:  Al Jia-Assadiyat, Al Awali, Zerariya and Tayr Flissa.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\t<\/span>This new series of attacks, following on the earlier attacks, constitutes a flagrant violation of the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, the rules of international law and fundamental human rights.<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>I should be grateful if you would have the text of this letter circulated as a document of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, under agenda item 40, and of the Security Council.<\/p><\/div>\n
