Report of the Secretary-General<\/u><\/p><\/div>\n

1.\t<\/span>At its fortieth session, the General Assembly considered the report of the Secretary-General on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories (A\/40\/373-E\/1985\/99), which had been submitted pursuant to its resolution 39\/169 of 17 December 1984. Subsequently, the Assembly adopted resolution 40\/201, by which it took note of the report of the Secretary-General and, in paragraph 6, requested the Secretary-General:<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(a)\t<\/span>To organize, by April 1987, a seminar on priority development projects needed for improving the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories, including a comprehensive general housing programme, as recommended in resolution 8\/3 of the Commission on Human Settlements; 1<\/u>\/<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>(b)\t<\/span>To make the necessary preparations for the seminar, providing for the participation of the Palestine Liberation Organization;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(c)\t<\/span>To invite experts to present papers to the seminar;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(d)\t<\/span>To invite also relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations;<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\t<\/span>(e)\t<\/span>To report to the Assembly at its forty-first session, through the Economic and Social Council, on the preparations for the seminar,<\/p><\/div>\n

\t<\/span>(f)\t<\/span>To report to the Assembly at its forty-second session, through the Economic and Social Council, on the seminar.<\/p><\/div>\n

2.\t<\/span>Pursuant to the above request, a selected group of experts has been invited to prepare and present to the seminar specific project proposals on subjects relevant to the theme of the seminar. As requested by the General Assembly in its resolution 40\/201, an invitation to attend and participate in the seminar has been sent to the Palestine Liberation Organization. Similarly, invitations to participate in the seminar have been sent to the relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as to appropriate United Nations bodies and agencies.<\/p><\/div>\n

3.\t<\/span>The seminar is tentatively scheduled to be held at Vienna from 9 to 13 March 1987. The report of the Secretary-General on the results of the seminar will be submitted to the General Assembly at its forty-second session, through the Economic and Social Council, as requested in paragraph 6 (f) of Assembly resolution 40\/201.<\/p><\/div>\n
