 I have the honour to enclose herewith a letter, from Nasser S. Judeh, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, regarding the decision of the Government of Jordan to present its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the term 2014-2015.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

   Letter from Nasser S. Judeh, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, regarding the decision of the Government of Jordan to present its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the term 2014-2015<\/strong> <\/p><\/div>\n

 I have the honour to write to you regarding the vacant non-permanent Security Council seat allocated to the Group of Asia-Pacific States for the term 2014-2015. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has renounced that seat, and we respect its sovereign choice and appreciate its reasons for doing so.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 As you are aware, the Group of Asia-Pacific States must now submit a nomination for the vacant seat. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan believes absolutely in the principles and purposes on which the United Nations is based. It is convinced of the need to preserve international peace and security and is committed to realizing the noble objectives of the Organization. Membership of the Security Council would be a means to reaffirm those objectives through practical action.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 The preservation of international peace and security is a fundamental and crucial goal for my country. Since becoming an independent country and joining the United Nations, Jordan has been committed in word and deed to peace and security, which it has consistently endeavoured to promote, consolidate and preserve. Its previous terms on the Security Council have been a testament to that firm principled position. Under the leadership of King Abdullah II Bin Al Hussein, Jordan has worked persistently for peace and a just and comprehensive two-State solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict, at the heart of which is the question of Palestine, through the establishment of an independent Palestinian State in accordance with international law, an outcome that would bring about peace and security for all. Jordan has also participated effectively and intensively in international peacekeeping operations around the world, and its contribution has been commended for its competence and quality. The Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan aspires to cooperate more closely with all States Members of the United Nations and with its main organs and specialized agencies, many of which it hosts.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 In view of the foregoing, I have the honour to inform you, on behalf of the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, of our formal candidacy for the Security Council for the term 2014-2015. Our decision to submit our candidacy was made after numerous consultations, in particular with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and with the Arab States.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

 Through non-permanent membership on the Security Council, my country hopes to demonstrate its absolute commitment to cooperation with other members in order to revitalize the work of the Council, and to fulfil effectively its duties under the Charter. Jordan is convinced of the importance of the Council’s role, and its work as a non-permanent member would reflect that stance. I should be grateful if you would take appropriate action, in accordance with the applicable rules of procedure, for Jordan to become a candidate.<\/span> <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
