{"id":158586,"date":"2018-07-31T19:06:14","date_gmt":"2018-07-31T19:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=158586"},"modified":"2018-10-12T14:35:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-12T18:35:20","slug":"daily-press-briefing-by-the-office-of-the-spokesperson-for-the-secretary-general-shortage-of-funds-for-emergency-fuel-programme-in-gaza-excerpts","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/daily-press-briefing-by-the-office-of-the-spokesperson-for-the-secretary-general-shortage-of-funds-for-emergency-fuel-programme-in-gaza-excerpts\/","title":{"rendered":"Daily Press Briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General \u2013 Shortage of Funds for Emergency Fuel Programme in Gaza  (Excerpts)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today\u2019s noon briefing by Eri Kaneko, Associate Spokeswoman for the Secretary-General.\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>**<u>Gaza<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Our humanitarian colleagues report that funding for the United Nations\u2011assisted emergency fuel programme for back-up generators in Gaza has been exhausted.\u00a0 As a result, only two thirds of the regular 950,000\u00a0litres of fuel will be distributed to 231\u00a0critical health, and water sanitation and hygiene facilities in August.\u00a0 In the absence of new funding, emergency fuel distributions will end by mid-August.\u00a0 Some $4.5\u00a0million is urgently needed for the operation to continue.\u00a0 The lack of emergency fuel will severely affect the provision of basic services to 2\u00a0million Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 2,000\u00a0patients in hospitals relying on electrical devices.\u00a0 Overall, some 1.27\u00a0million people will be directly affected by the closure of the hospitals and reduction in provision of vital health interventions.\u00a0 Additionally, the reduced functioning of water and sanitation facilities risks an increase of waterborne diseases and outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><u>Question<\/u>:\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 I just want to ask you, has the United Nations officials been successful in asking Israeli to release\u2026 to, what do you call, ease up on the Gaza crossings into Gaza?\u00a0 Has it been successful, any successful talk to the Israelis?<\/p>\n<p><u>Associate Spokeswoman<\/u>:\u00a0 As you will recall last week, thanks to some interventions by the UN, Egypt and others, we were able to see an opening of the Kerem Shalom crossing to let some fuel out.\u00a0 What we are asking for is an easing in all areas to allow more goods and items into Gaza, as well as more funding, the situation which you are probably aware of.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The following is a near-verbatim transcript of today\u2019s noon briefing by Eri Kaneko, Associate Spokeswoman for the Secretary-General.\/&#8230;
