{"id":131493,"date":"2018-04-13T21:14:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-13T21:14:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=131493"},"modified":"2020-07-22T00:53:19","modified_gmt":"2020-07-22T04:53:19","slug":"in-remarks-to-the-security-council-secretary-general-sees-wounds-of-palestinian-conflict-deepening","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/in-remarks-to-the-security-council-secretary-general-sees-wounds-of-palestinian-conflict-deepening\/","title":{"rendered":"In Remarks to the Security Council, Secretary-General Sees Wounds of Palestinian Conflict Deepening"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-name-field-symbol field-type-taxonomy-info\">\n<div style=\"text-align: right\"><strong>SG\/SM\/18986-SC\/13294<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field-name-field-dated field-type-taxonomy-info\" style=\"text-align: right\"><strong><span class=\"date-display-single\">13 APRIL 2018<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/press\/fr\/2018\/cs13293.doc.htm\">fran\u00e7ais<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Following are UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u2019 remarks to the Security Council meeting on the Middle East, in New York today:<\/p>\n<p>The situation in the Middle East is in chaos \u2014 to such an extent it has become a threat to international peace and security.\u00a0 The region is facing a true Gordian knot \u2014 different fault lines crossing each other and creating a highly volatile situation with risks of escalation, fragmentation and division as far as the eye can see with profound regional and global ramifications.<\/p>\n<p>We see a multiplicity of divides.<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Second, the Palestinian-Israeli divide.\u00a0 Third, the Sunni-Shia divide, evident from the Gulf to the Mediterranean.\u00a0 It is important to note that apparent religious divides are normally the result of political or geostrategic manipulations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Many forms of escalation are possible.\u00a0 We see the wounds of the Palestinian\u2011Israeli conflict deepening once again.\u00a0 The recent violence in Gaza has resulted in many needless deaths and injuries.\u00a0 I repeat my call for an independent and transparent investigation into these incidents.\u00a0 I also appeal to those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties, and in particular, any measures that could place civilians in harm&#8217;s way.<\/p>\n<p>This tragedy underlines the urgency of revitalizing the peace process for a two-State solution that will allow Palestinians and Israelis to live in two democratic States side by side in peace and within secure and recognized borders.\u00a0 I reaffirm the United Nations\u2019 readiness to support these efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\/&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For information media.
