UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People

VIRTUAL EVENT

Tuesday, 7 December 2021, 10.30 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. (NY Time)

The UN Palestinian Rights Committee organized the Virtual Event on “Supporting Human Rights Defenders in the Occupied Palestinian Territory: Reality, Challenges, and Obligations”.

The event was chaired by Amb. Syed Mohamad Hasrin Aidid, Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations, and organized as a panel of speakers including Mr. Wessam Ahmad (Director of the Applied Center for International Law, Al-Haq), MrSaleh Higazi (Head of Jerusalem Office, Amnesty International), Mr. Michael Sfard (Israeli Human Rights Lawyer) and Mr. Omar Shakir (Israel and Palestine Director, Human Rights Watch).

The event aimed to shed light on the implications of the Israeli decision of 22 October 2021 to designate six Palestinian human rights and humanitarian NGOs as “terrorist organizations” and more broadly on the work of civil society organizations and human rights defenders in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, and to underline the role and responsibilities of the international community in the context of the prevailing challenges and shrinking space for Palestinian human rights defenders.
