Gaza Strip, 15 October 2020– Around 129 non-refugee families will be able to reconstruct their totally damaged homes in Gaza following UNDP’s disbursement of a new batch of payments of US$ 580,246 through the supporting reconstruction of homes for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip project. The payments were disbursed through Gaza banks, while taking into consideration COVID-19 precautionary measures.
In its fifth year of implementation, and with support from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), the project will enable 272 families by 2020 to reconstruct their houses, which have been totally damaged following the Gaza 2014 hostilities, and improve their livelihoods. The self-help modality will be used during the project and female-headed households will be prioritized, while taking into consideration family size and current socio-economic status.
It is worth noting that the United Nations Development Programme signed a fourth amendment for the memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for an amount of US$ 10 million funded by the Saudi Fund for Development. This brings the total SFD contribution to US$ 81.5 million, benefiting approximately 13,467 families from the Gaza Strip.
