Swedish International Development Agency and UNESCO Support Cultural Heritage Preservation – UNESCO News Item

The Government of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and UNESCO Office in Ramallah signed on 4 July 2017 a cost-extension of the Funds in Trust Agreement concerning the project “Local development through the rehabilitation and revitalization of historic environment in Palestine” for the period 2017-2018.

The project, funded by the Government of Sweden through (Sida) and implemented by UNESCO,. Since 2012, the project has built an implementation partnership with the four major local actors in the field of cultural heritage conservation in Palestine: the Riwaq Centre for Architectural Conservation, the Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation (CCHP), the Hebron Rehabilitation Committee (HRC) and the Taawon – Old City of Jerusalem Revitalization Programme (OCJRP) and will continue this partnership for the extension period to come.

During its five years of implementation, the project has rehabilitated 50 sites in Palestinian cities and rural localities, including Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. These sites have been adapted to serve as facilities utilized by civil society organizations, municipalities and village councils providing public social services. It contributed to the local development through generating 80,000 working days providing temporary job opportunities in each area where the project intervened. The project also supported the revision of the draft Palestinian Tangible Cultural Heritage Law, which was finalized and submitted by the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to the Cabinet for endorsement.

In the coming period of the extension, the project will continue to build on the accumulated achievements in the field of cultural heritage preservation to complement the ongoing effort of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities leading to institutional development and state building. In addition, it will continue to cooperate with the civil society organizations in order to safeguard the Palestinian cultural heritage and foster local development.
