Minister for Foreign Affairs Margot Wallström spoke on the telephone today to UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the upcoming ministerial meeting on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which was convened at the initiative of Sweden and Jordan. Ms Wallström stressed that the purpose of the meeting, to be held in Rome on 15 March, is to mobilise political and financial support for UNRWA, which is currently facing an acute budget deficit of USD 446 million.
UNRWA assists more than five million Palestinian refugees, one third of whom still live in refugee camps, and plays an important stabilising role in an already troubled region.
Ms Wallström thanked the Secretary-General for his strong commitment to UNRWA and his leading role in improving its financing.
