The President: I now give the floor to the representative of Brazil, who wishes to speak in explanation of vote concerning resolution 75/96.
Mr. De Souza Monteiro (Brazil): Resolution 75/96, adopted in the Fourth Committee, makes reference to the holy places of Jerusalem, including the Temple Mount/ Haram Al-Sharif. Brazil supported the resolution because of its commitment to the protection of human rights, in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. However, Brazil believes that the language of any future resolutions should reflect the importance and historical significance of the holy sites of Jerusalem for the three monotheistic religions, especially the Temple Mount, Al-Haram Al-Sharif, and should take into consideration their respective religious and cultural sensitivities. The future choice of language may affect Brazilian support for this resolution.
The President: May I take it that it is the wish of the General Assembly to conclude its consideration of agenda item 53?
It was so decided.
