The design and decoration of the Security Council Consultation Room was sponsored by the Russian Federation. The design concept is based on the idea that folk ornaments transmit information through the ages. For example, the curtain incorporates patterns typical in the north and includes patterns that represent different nations. When the room’s symbolic circular ceiling lamps are unlit, they look like silver mirror rings. However, when illuminated they provide a glow for the room. It represents the inexhaustible energy, the light of goodness that protects people against falling into the dark abyss of hatred and war. The Russian cultural imprint is apparent in the ornate wooden panels, the patchwork curtains, and the unique circular lamp on the ceiling. Overall, the design of the room is meant to help bridge differences and make the world a better place to live for current and succeeding generations.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and H.E. Vitaly I. Churkin, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN and President of the Security Council for the month of March, inaugurated the newly renovated Security Council Consultations Room on 27 March 2013. The renovation is a gift from the Russian Federation.
