The Department of Political Affairs provides backstopping support and guidance to the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for talks aimed at resolving the name dispute between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

Negotiations on the name dispute began in 1993 and have been led since 1999 under the auspices of Personal Envoy Matthew Nimetz. The sides have taken a major step towards resolving their difference by signing an Agreement on 17 June 2018. The Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy continue to support the sides in their efforts to settle this dispute.
