Tanzania Launch of the Technology Needs Assessment to Drive Innovation and Inclusive Development
Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 25 June 2025
The United Republic of Tanzania today marked a major milestone with the official launch of its Technology Needs Assessment (TNA), conducted by the United Nations Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries (UN Technology Bank) in partnership with International Seabed Authority, the Deep Sea Fishing Authority and other key national stakeholders. The event was graced by His Excellency Hon. Shaaban Ali Othman, Minister of Blue Economy and Fisheries, who emphasized the importance of coordinated action to unlock the blue economy’s full potential.
The TNA report identifies agriculture and the blue economy as priority sectors with strong potential to create jobs, boost exports, and drive inclusive growth. It highlights the critical roles of mining and manufacturing when integrated with technology-led transformation. Two main technology categories were prioritized: Data Management Technologies (such as digital platforms and remote sensing tools) and Climate-Smart Technologies (including seaweed tissue culture and precision agriculture tools), aligned with Tanzania’s national development visions.
“This TNA report is deeply rooted in national ownership, and is not only a milestone for advancing innovation but a practical guide for building a resilient and sustainable future,” said Minister Shaaban Ali Othman and then added, “The technologies identified will enhance sustainable marine resource management and strengthen coastal livelihoods. I encourage coordinated action and investment by all partners.”
Mr. Deodat Maharaj, Managing Director of the UN Technology Bank, praised the inclusive and participatory process behind the TNA, noting it ensures solutions are technically sound and locally relevant. He reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting Tanzania in advancing key initiatives and fostering public-private-academic collaboration.
In closing, Mr. Maharaj called on all stakeholders to embrace the TNA as a roadmap for innovation-led development: “This is a call to action. Together, let us turn insights into tangible solutions that create jobs, protect our environment, and secure a more prosperous future for Tanzania.”
