Your Excellency, Amb. Mona Juul, President of the Economic and SocialCouncil,Excellencies,Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is my honor to address you at the closing of this FFD Forum meeting.
I will not attempt to summarize the rich discussions today. Let me share three main takeaways.
First, financing is truly the lynchpin for responding to the pandemic and achieving a resilient and sustainable recovery.
The challenges of this crisis extend to all action areas of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. Rising debt levels, falling revenues and an economy in crisis are hampering the mobilization of resources for response and recovery.
We must not let the crisis derail the implementation of the Addis Agenda. On the contrary, accelerating its implementation is the best response to the daunting challenges we are facing.
Second, we must look beyond the horizon.
It is critical to relieve the massive suffering. But we must go further, to recognize where the vulnerabilities rest in our systems, structures and institutions. Without addressing the root causes, potential risks will materialize into major shocks. For example, if we do not have a durable solution to debt sustainability, short-term debt relief will be futile.
Third, we must pursue multilateral solutions.
The pandemic reminded us, the hard way, that multilateral cooperation and institutions are indispensable, as no border can stop it.Under the leadership of the President of ECOSOC, the Forum rallied the entire UN membership to agree on a first universal intergovernmental outcome on COVID-19 response. This is no small feat. It has only been achieved at this Forum.
We must pursue policy solutions through inclusive fora, such as the FFD Forum.
Dear colleagues,
In these trying times, countries need concrete solutions.
UNDESA is working closely with partners to make sure that information on financing options and policies is readily available, and easily accessible, for Member States.
This includes the compendium of resources and initiatives that we have prepared for this meeting.
I would like to take this opportunity to announce the launch of the newly redesigned website of UNDESA’s Financing for Sustainable Development Office. The website aims to be a ‘one-stop shop’ for the latest and most relevant UN policy analysis, parliamentary documentation and training and capacity-related resources, to unlock financing for the 2030 and Addis Agendas.
Let me conclude by stressing that UNDESA is fully mobilized to support you in your response and recovery efforts. We are at your disposal to support you in navigating this unchartered territory and rebuild better in line with the 2030 Agenda.
I thank you.
