{"id":944,"date":"2015-02-27T20:55:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-27T20:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=944"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:12:04","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:12:04","slug":"women-must-be-at-the-decision-making-table-at-all-levels-un-tells-high-level-meeting-in-chile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/02\/women-must-be-at-the-decision-making-table-at-all-levels-un-tells-high-level-meeting-in-chile\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Women must be at the decision-making table at all levels\u2019 UN tells high-level meeting in Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-soundcloud\"><iframe scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" width=\"100%\" height=\"81\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/unradio\/gender-equality-progress-slow&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=true&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;visual=false&amp;color=ff7700\" title=\"soundcloud\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:20px;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div>\n<p>The world must unite to end violence and discrimination against women and girls, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/stories\/2015\/02\/ed-in-chile\" target=\"_blank\">high-level event in Chile on women and decision-making today<\/a>, citing that progress over the past two decades has been made slow and uneven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must work together to empower women and expand opportunities in politics, business and beyond,\u201d Mr. Ban told participants at today\u2019s High-level Conference on \u2018Women in Power and Decision-making: Making a World of Difference,\u2019 in Santiago co-hosted by Chile\u2019s Government and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\">UN Women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This resolve must be backed up with resources because investments in gender equality yield great returns across society, said Mr. Ban emphasizing that 2015 is a \u201cvital year\u201d for advancing all these goals.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General\u2019s remarks come ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/womensday\/\" target=\"_blank\">worldwide commemoration on 8 March of International Women\u2019s Day<\/a>, which this year coincides with the <a href=\"http:\/\/beijing20.unwomen.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\">20th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action<\/a>, which remains the \u201cinternational blueprint\u201d for gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>Also this year, the international community is hard at work on establishing a new sustainable development agenda that builds on the landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/millenniumgoals\/\" target=\"_blank\">UN Millennium Development Goals<\/a> (MDGs) and that will help shape policies and social investments for the next generation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is my firm conviction that women must be at the decision-making table at all levels. We all must do our part to break the glass ceilings and open the doors of opportunity\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>said Mr. Ban. \u201cTo be truly transformative, the post-2015 development agenda must prioritize gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment. Women\u2019s voices and full participation is central.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the side-lines of the conference, the Secretary-General met with Michelle Bachelet, President of Chile, who in 2010, was the first to lead the then newly-created UN Women. He thanked the Chilean Government for co-hosting the conference on \u2018Women in power and decision-making\u2019 and also expressed appreciation for the different measures Chile has taken toward women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary-General and President Bachelet also exchanged views about the importance of gender equality in the framework of the post-2015 development agenda.
