{"id":818,"date":"2015-02-23T15:12:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-23T15:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=818"},"modified":"2020-03-04T13:56:21","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T18:56:21","slug":"photo-competition-shines-spotlight-on-family-meal-in-achieving-un-zero-hunger-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/02\/photo-competition-shines-spotlight-on-family-meal-in-achieving-un-zero-hunger-goal\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Photo competition shines spotlight on \u2018family meal\u2019 in achieving &#8216;Zero Hunger&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><div id=\"fullstory\">\n<p>Scenes of families eating together in Burundi, Laos and the Philippines today won a photo competition judged by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver aimed at demonstrating \u201cthe simple yet powerful role provided by sitting tougher and eating as a family,\u201d the World Food Programme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfp.org\/\">WFP<\/a>) announced.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the opening of the photo exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels titled: <em>The Family Meal \u2013 What brings us together?<\/em>, WFP Executive Director Ertharin Cousin\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfp.org\/news\/news-release\/winners-announced-wfp-eu-photo-competition-shining-spotlight-central-role-family-\">praised<\/a> the photographers for highlighting the importance of food and nutrition in everyday life and the role families play in achieving Zero Hunger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese photographs inspire because they demonstrate the simple yet powerful role provided by sitting together and eating as a family in every country and all cultures around the world,\u201d Ms. Cousin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everyone in the world can share this opportunity \u2013 805 million people don\u2019t have enough nutritious food to live a healthy and productive life. For this reason WFP and our partners are working together with the EU [European Union] to end hunger and chronic malnutrition around the globe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;margin-top:20px;margin-bottom:20px;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>The exhibition and the competition are part of a campaign launched last year by WFP and funded by the European Commission&#8217;s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO). The aim is to raise awareness among Europe\u2019s citizens about the food assistance WFP and the EU provide to vulnerable families around the world and to highlight the fact that hunger can be eliminated in our lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>The competition\u2019s three winners are Ari Vitikainen, for <em>Khauchi Papa, a special meal in the highlands of Laos<\/em>, Breech Asher Harani\u2019s <em>Candlelight Supper<\/em>, from the Philippines, and Darine Ndihokubwayo, whose picture of street children in Burundi enjoying a Sunday meal received 175 online votes. The winners can be viewed at <a href=\"http:\/\/familymeal.eu\/index-en.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement made after he judged the competition Jamie Oliver said: \u201cAri\u2019s colourful shot from Laos is a fantastic example of how important and fun it can be to prepare and share a meal with your loved ones. A family meal might seem like one of the most basic things in the world, but it&#8217;s easy to forget that this isn&#8217;t a given, and there are many people that struggle to do this. It&#8217;s a big issue, and I hope this competition will help to raise awareness of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the public vote, Darine Ndihokubwayo, sent in her response: \u201cThis nomination will go to all the orphan children in Burundi, who are not lucky enough to have a family to share their daily meal with.<\/p>\n<p>WFP is the world\u2019s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience.
