{"id":5827,"date":"2015-06-04T19:48:48","date_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=5827"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:09:30","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:09:30","slug":"un-agency-reports-world-food-prices-declining-to-six-year-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/06\/un-agency-reports-world-food-prices-declining-to-six-year-low\/","title":{"rendered":"UN agency reports world food prices declining to six-year low"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The prices of major food commodities continued their downward trajectory through May as cereal prices dropped amid an increasingly favourable forecast for this year\u2019s harvests, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/home\/en\/\">FAO<\/a>) confirmed today.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN agency\u2019s monthly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/worldfoodsituation\/foodpricesindex\/en\/\">Food Price Index<\/a>, the May 2015 forecast for the global production of wheat, coarse grains and rice has been \u201cupgraded\u201d as maize harvests in China and Mexico as well as more abundant wheat harvests in Africa and North America are currently anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>The resulting drop in prices for May marks a steady 3.8 per cent monthly decline in the cereal price index, a 2.9 per cent drop in the dairy price index and a one per cent drop in the meat price index.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Organization also predicts that global rice output will grow by 1.3 percent from last year mainly due to increases across Asia.
