{"id":41826,"date":"2017-11-15T21:57:35","date_gmt":"2017-11-15T21:57:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=41826"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:48:16","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:48:16","slug":"countries-benefit-fast-moving-ict-revolution-urges-un-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/11\/countries-benefit-fast-moving-ict-revolution-urges-un-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"All countries should benefit from fast-moving ICT revolution, urges UN agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Revolutionary advances in technology have the potential to \u201cfundamentally transform\u201d billions of lives, but the threat that many people \u2013 especially in the world\u2019s poorer countries \u2013 could be left out continues to loom large, a new United Nations report warns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInformation and communication technologies (ICTs) have the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/mediacentre\/Pages\/2017-PR60.aspx\">potential to make the world a better place<\/a>\u00a0and contribute immensely to sustainable development,\u201d said Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the UN International Telecommunication Union \u2013 the Organization\u2019s specialized agency for matters related to ICT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, despite the overall progress achieved, the digital divide remains a challenge which needs to be addressed,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN agency\u2019s 2017\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/ITU-D\/Statistics\/Pages\/publications\/mis2017.aspx\">Measuring the Information Society<\/a>\u00a0report, harnessing the benefits of advances in the \u2018Internet of Things\u2019, big data, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, countries will need to create conditions and infrastructures that allow these next-generation networks and services.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the substantial digital divides between countries and regions will also need to be addressed.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>[The ICT] revolution will unfold over the coming decades with opportunities, challenges, and implications that are not yet fully known-<small>ITU report<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For instance, least developed countries \u2013 which have, over the years, made progress in improving ICT infrastructure and connectivity \u2013 continue to lag behind on key indicators that can influence their position in the digital economy, such as having the lowest numbers among internet users (15.2 per cent on average).<\/p>\n<p>Countries, irrespective of their development classification, will also have to adopt policies that that harbour innovation, as well as those that mitigate risks to information security, privacy and employment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report will help to support countries to do just that,\u201d expressed Mr. Zhao.<\/p>\n<p>The report employs the ICT Development Index 2017, a unique benchmark of the level of ICT development in countries across the world.<\/p>\n<p>This year, Iceland (score: 8.98) tops the rankings, followed by Republic of Korea (8.80) and Switzerland (8.66). United States, with a score of 8.18, ranks 16. However, the best performing African country, the island nation of Mauritius ranked 75, with a score of 5.88.<\/p>\n<p><em>Measuring the Information Society<\/em>, ITU\u2019s flagship publication is recognized as the most authoritative repository of data and analysis on the state of global ICT development.
