{"id":26836,"date":"2017-05-31T15:03:15","date_gmt":"2017-05-31T15:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=26836"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:53:03","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:53:03","slug":"climate-action-a-necessity-and-an-opportunity-says-un-chief-urging-world-to-rally-behind-paris-accord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/05\/climate-action-a-necessity-and-an-opportunity-says-un-chief-urging-world-to-rally-behind-paris-accord\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate action &#8216;a necessity and an opportunity,&#8217; says UN chief, urging world to rally behind Paris accord"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Highlighting the seriousness of the impact of climate change on the planet and its inhabitants, United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\">Secretary-General<\/a> Ant\u00f3nio Guterres today called for sustained action to meet the global challenge and to ensure a peaceful and sustainable future for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effects of climate change are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2017-05-30\/secretary-general-climate-action-delivered\">dangerous and they are accelerating<\/a>,\u201d Secretary-General Guterres told a gathering of students, business leaders and academics at the New York University Stern School of Business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is absolutely essential that the world implements the <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unfccc.int\/unfccc-newsroom\/finale-cop21\/\">Paris Agreement<\/a> [on climate change] \u2013 and that we fulfil that duty with increased ambition,\u201d he underscored, recalling the ground-breaking agreement that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=55473\">entered into force<\/a> last November.<\/p>\n<p>The Agreement calls on countries to combat climate change and to accelerate and intensify the actions and investments needed for a sustainable low carbon future, and to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>It also aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change and calls for scaled up financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity-building framework to support action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries in line with their own national objectives.<\/p>\n<h5><strong><em>Science &#8216;is beyond doubt&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Underlining that science behind climate change \u201cis beyond doubt,\u201d Mr. Guterres said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change put it: &#8216;Human influence on the climate system is clear. The more we disrupt our climate, the more we risk severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts,&#8217;\u201d he said, recalling that global temperatures have been rising, year after year, and that that last year was the hottest on record.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there are fears that the melt of sea ice and glaciers due to rising temperatures will have deep and far reaching impact: droughts and dry spells will last longer, while natural disasters like floods and hurricanes will be even more destructive.<\/p>\n<p>Impacts of these catastrophic events, Mr. Guterres noted, would be felt in all corners of the world and in all sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Informing of his intention to convene a dedicated climate summit in 2019 to reach the critical first review of implementation of the Paris Agreement, the UN chief called on all, including those who might hold divergent perspectives on climate change to engage with him on the way forward.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5RQGEpKbYWA?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h5><strong><em>Green business is good business<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>He also pointed to the opportunities that climate action can provide, such as through the creation of jobs and increased economic growth. It is thus, not surprising, that many private corporations, including major oil and gas companies have adopted climate action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know that green business is good business.
