{"id":2639,"date":"2015-03-20T13:48:31","date_gmt":"2015-03-20T13:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=2639"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:11:16","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:11:16","slug":"international-happiness-day-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/03\/international-happiness-day-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"On International Day, UN chief calls for efforts to &#8216;fill world with happiness&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Happiness for the entire human family is one of the main goals of the United Nations, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared, as the Organization kicked-off its global celebrations marking the annual observance of the International Day of Happiness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeace, prosperity, lives of dignity for all \u2013 this is what we seek. We want all men, women and children to enjoy all their human rights. We want all countries to know the pleasure of peace,\u201d the Secretary-General said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/happinessday\/2015\/sgmessage.shtml\">his message for the Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe want people and planet alike to be blessed with sustainable development, and to be spared the catastrophic impacts of climate change.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In April 2012, the UN held a high-level meeting on \u201cHappiness and Well-Being: Defining a New Economic Paradigm\u201d at the initiative of Bhutan, a country which recognized the supremacy of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product (GDP).<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:800px;--awb-max-height:367px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:45.88%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/52XxHs_5yBU?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"800\" height=\"367\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>In July of that year, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 20 March the International Day of Happiness, recognizing the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in people&#8217;s lives and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its effort to emphasize the importance of happiness in daily life, the UN along with global music streaming service MixRadio has launched the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.happysoundslike.com\/en\/index.html\">#HappySoundsLike campaign<\/a>, appealing to the global citizenry \u201cto nominate a song that brings a smile to your face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The campaign seeks to seize the power of music and \u201cinspire hope for a better tomorrow\u201d as it encourages people to suggest songs that best represent the feeling of happiness.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ban nominated his Messenger of Peace Stevie Wonder&#8217;s song \u201cSigned, Sealed, Delivered\u201d to the playlist, adding that to him #happysoundslike a new climate deal and an agreed set of sustainable development goals, both on the agenda of world leaders for later this year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:800px;--awb-max-height:367px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:45.88%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Uvx9dkixFU4?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"800\" height=\"367\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay;
