{"id":25907,"date":"2017-04-11T17:47:04","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T17:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=25907"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:53:47","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:53:47","slug":"un-announces-first-ever-world-ocean-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/04\/un-announces-first-ever-world-ocean-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"UN announces first-ever World Ocean Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With global leaders heading to the United Nations for a major conference in June on the protection and sustainable use of the planet\u2019s oceans, the UN today announced that the inaugural World Ocean Festival will kick off the week-long event, with activists and enthusiasts taking to the streets \u2013 and waterways \u2013 of New York City to raise their voices to reverse the declining health of our oceans.<\/p>\n<p>At a joint press briefing at UN Headquarters today, Penny Abeywardena, the Commissioner of the (New York City) Mayor\u2019s Office for International Affairs, joined Peter Thompson, President of the UN General Assembly, to announce the first-ever Festival which will be held on Sunday, 4 June, the day before the opening of <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanconference.un.org\/\">The Ocean Conference<\/a>, which will run from 5 to 9 June.<\/p>\n<p>The Festival, organized by the Global Brain Foundation, will galvanize people across the world to bring public attention to the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>), specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg14\">Goal 14<\/a>, on conservation and sustainable use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, \u201cright here in New York City, a premier coastal city,\u201d said Ms. Abeywardena.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough these gatherings, people will come together to catalyze specific steps we can take as a community to preserve our oceans and engage our citizens and in particular, our young people,\u201d she said, adding that, with 520 miles (about 835 kilometres) of coastline, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s administration recognizes the need for cities to lead on protecting the planet from degradation through sustainable consumption and effective management of the world\u2019s natural resources and mitigating the worst impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Assembly President Thomson said New York City is a model not only in the United States but around the world of what cities can do in integrating the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a> with their urban development planning, drawing attention to Mayor de Blasio\u2019s \u2018One NYC\u2019 initiative.<\/p>\n<h5><em>An opportunity to address major woes humanity has put upon the ocean<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>As for the Conference, he said \u201cthe ocean is in deep trouble,\u201d facing threats such as marine pollution; fishery subsidies at a time when fish stocks are collapsing; and degraded coastal ecosystems planet-wide. \u201cThe Ocean Conference is <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[a timely opportunity] to address these major woes humanity has put upon the ocean,\u201d he continued, adding that it also will provide an opportunity to think about the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith ocean acidification, we\u2019re already seeing the effects of this; its serious business in Oregon and Washington state and its spreading around the world and is also serious business for the tropics, where because of rising temperatures life is leaving our waters because it is too hot,\u201d explained Mr. Thomson, noting that 40 per cent of the cause of rising sea levels is due to the fact that oceans are heating up.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25910\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/455873-worldoceanday.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25910\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/455873-worldoceanday.jpg\" alt=\"UN Photo\/Martine Perret\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/455873-worldoceanday-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/455873-worldoceanday.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25910\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UN Photo\/Martine Perret<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And yet \u201call human problems have human solutions and that\u2019s what the Ocean Conference is about, working to find what the solutions are,\u201d he emphasized, noting that UN Member States are currently making good progress on the \u2018call to action\u2019 that would be agreed by the Conference. Further, in addition to a plenary, the Conference would also feature seven partnership dialogues focused on SDG 14.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Thomson went on to highlight the <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanconference.un.org\/commitments\/\">registry of voluntary commitments<\/a>, to which the UN was urging all stakeholders and \u201ceverybody who gives a hoot about the ocean\u201d to register to between now and the Conference \u201cso that you stand and be counted in our call to action to reverse the cycle of decline in which the ocean has been caught.\u201d The roll of the media is important in all this, to get the word out about the state of the planet\u2019s oceans \u201cbut also that we\u2019re doing something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalia Vega-Berry, founder of the Global Brain Foundation and Executive Producer of the World Ocean Festival said the event will aim to show world leaders gathering for the UN conference the urgency for taking action. \u201cOur ocean is a connective tissue for the world\u2019s entire population. It makes planet Earth and us all one, as we are surrounded by shores. At the same time, our ocean is at great risk of pollution, overfishing, climate change and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"span3 pull-right\">\n<div class=\"tooltip fade right in\">\n<div class=\"tooltip-arrow\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/E_SDG_Icons-14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-25916\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/E_SDG_Icons-14-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"E_SDG_Icons-14\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/E_SDG_Icons-14-66x66.jpg 66w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/E_SDG_Icons-14-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/E_SDG_Icons-14-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/E_SDG_Icons-14.jpg 466w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"tooltip-inner\">Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While coastal cities and island nations feel the most pressing burden of such threats, she said that the Festival will aim to bring together all people who care deeply about the oceans\u2019 future to \u201craise their voices in support of the ocean and call on world leaders to take action to save it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said that while the Festival will be held in New York, other cities could also be inspired to organize their own events.<\/p>\n<p>New York\u2019s festival will feature a first-of-its kind grand \u201cocean march,\u201d which will be a parade of sailing vessels around lower Manhattan and along 10 nautical miles of Manhattan and Brooklyn waterfront from the Hudson to the East River.
