{"id":25499,"date":"2017-04-26T16:25:23","date_gmt":"2017-04-26T16:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=25499"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:53:39","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:53:39","slug":"inequalities-between-rich-and-poor-temper-broad-success-of-immunization-unicef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/04\/inequalities-between-rich-and-poor-temper-broad-success-of-immunization-unicef\/","title":{"rendered":"Inequalities between rich and poor temper broad success of immunization \u2013 UNICEF"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Even though billions of doses of vaccines for children across 100 countries around the world were supplied in 2016, millions of children \u2013 especially those in conflict zones \u2013 still miss out on life-saving inoculations, the United Nations Children\u2019s Fund (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\">UNICEF<\/a>) has warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll children, no matter where they live or what their circumstances are, have the right to survive and thrive, safe from deadly diseases,\u201d Robin Nandy, the Chief of Immunization at UNICEF, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/media\/media_95895.html\">news release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Access to immunization has led to a dramatic decrease in deaths of children under the age of five from vaccine-preventable diseases, and has brought the world closer to eradicating deadly scourges like polio and measles but despite this progress, 1.5 million children still die from diseases which can be prevented by vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>According to estimates, 19.4 million children around the world still miss out on full vaccinations every year.<\/p>\n<p>Around two thirds of all unvaccinated children live in conflict-affected countries. Weak health systems, poverty and social inequities also mean that one in five children under the age of five is still not reached with life-saving vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, persisting inequality between rich and poor children further exasperate the problem.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b8_XiSl6TxU?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>In countries where 80 per cent of the world\u2019s under-five child deaths occur, over half of the poorest children are not fully vaccinated.
