{"id":25253,"date":"2017-04-19T23:22:23","date_gmt":"2017-04-19T23:22:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=25253"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:53:43","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:53:43","slug":"progress-against-tropical-diseases-must-be-backed-by-poverty-alleviation-efforts-un-health-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/04\/progress-against-tropical-diseases-must-be-backed-by-poverty-alleviation-efforts-un-health-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"Progress against tropical diseases must be backed by poverty alleviation efforts \u2013 UN health agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>The United Nations today cited \u201crecord-breaking\u201d progress in controlling neglected tropical diseases \u2013 which blind, maim, disfigure and debilitate millions of people worldwide, especially in its poorest areas \u2013 as an estimated one billion people were reached with treatment for at least one of these diseases in 2015 alone, according to the Organization\u2019s health agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[We have] observed record-breaking progress towards bringing ancient scourges like sleeping sickness and elephantiasis to their knees,\u201d said Margaret Chan, the Director-General of the UN World Health Organization in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2017\/ntd-report\/en\/\">news release<\/a> today on efforts to tackle the diseases, known as NTDs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past 10 years, millions of people have been rescued from disability and poverty, thanks to one of the most effective global partnerships in modern public health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UN agency\u2019s new report, <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/10665\/255011\/1\/9789241565448-eng.pdf\">Integrating Neglected Tropical Diseases into Global Health and Development<\/a>, shows how political support, improvements in living conditions and supply of medicines have led to sustained expansion of disease control programmes in countries where these diseases are most prevalent.<\/p>\n<p>Another major milestone was the endorsement of a NTD roadmap in 2012, in which WHO partners committed additional support and resources to eliminating 10 of the most common NTDs.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0zPn_5B4JRI?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><\/div>For sustaining this momentum, experts believe that wider progress towards realizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\">2030 Agenda<\/a> for Sustainable Development will be crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting global targets for water and sanitation, such as those under the global Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>) will be key.<\/p>\n<p>WHO estimates that 2.4 billion people still lack basic sanitation facilities such as toilets and latrines, while more than 660 million continue to drink water from \u201cunimproved\u201d sources, such as surface water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurther gains [\u2026] will depend on wider progress towards the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>,\u201d said Dirk Engels, Director of WHO\u2019s Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Once widely prevalent, diseases are now restricted to tropical and sub-tropical regions with unsafe water, inadequate hygiene and sanitation, and poor housing conditions.
