{"id":25217,"date":"2017-04-18T22:30:32","date_gmt":"2017-04-18T22:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=25217"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:53:45","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:53:45","slug":"un-forum-highlights-importance-of-stronger-partnerships-for-financing-sustainable-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/04\/un-forum-highlights-importance-of-stronger-partnerships-for-financing-sustainable-development\/","title":{"rendered":"UN forum highlights importance of stronger partnerships for financing sustainable development"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Underlining the importance of sustainable finance for the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\">2030 Agenda<\/a> for Sustainable Development, senior United Nations officials today called for stronger partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders to ensure that resource requirements are met.<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/dsg\/statement\/2017-04-18\/deputy-secretary-generals-remarks-high-level-meeting-financing\">opening remarks<\/a> at the high-level event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/event-latest\/high-level-sdg-financing-lab\/\">SDG Financing Lab \u2013 How to finance the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed recalled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/esa\/ffd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AAAA_Outcome.pdf\">Addis Ababa Action Agenda<\/a>, which was adopted in 2015 at the UN Third International Conference on Financing for Development.<\/p>\n<p>She said the agreement \u2013 which sets out a series of bold measures to overhaul global finance practices and generate investments for tackling a range of economic, social and environmental challenges \u2013 is a key component of the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Action Agenda provides the framework for global cooperation to finance and implement the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>) by mobilizing public and private sources,\u201d said Ms. Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy UN chief also noted that in addition to prioritizing domestic resource mobilization, aligning public spending with sustainable development and partnership with the private sector and businesses is equally important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in the interest of all countries, companies and people to tap the wealth of good that sustainable development will bring in environmental, economic and social terms,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>In her remarks, Ms. Mohammed also noted that financial flows and investments are increasingly being aligned with the SDGs and said that with mobilization of large pools of capital such as pension funds and the insurance sector, \u201cgreater wins\u201d for everyone can be realized.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8juCHBNOZEE?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h5><em>VIDEO: UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, outlines strategic approach to financially fuel the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>\u201cThe dividends will reverberate far and wide <div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[\u2026] success on the SDGs will trigger beneficial results that will feed project pipelines leading to progress on gender, economic growth and climate action,\u201d she added, noting examples from around the world that have shown such benefits.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mobilizing the \u2018right mix\u2019 of resources vital \u2013 General Assembly President<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also speaking at the opening, the President of the General Assembly, Peter Thomson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/2017\/04\/18\/opening-of-sdg-financing-lab\/\">said<\/a> that financing the SDGs could require some $90 trillion over the next 15 years and called for \u201cexponential transformation\u201d in the global financial system that taps into all sources of funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at a time when we must foment a global conversation bringing all stakeholders together to discuss how we can mobilize the right mix of resources to achieve the SDGs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must distinguish between the various sources of capital and asset classes that they represent, and recognize their varying spheres of operation and influence \u2013 from multinational corporations through to grassroots small-holder farmers.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U361lIHC_YY?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h5><em><strong>VIDEO<\/strong>: UN General Assembly President, Peter Thomson, underscores the need to mobilise both public and private financing in driving the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>Mr. Thomson also said that efforts by governments, central banks and financial regulators are already leading to positive developments but multiplying these efforts to reach the scale needed to achieve the global goals remains the main challenge.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, he underlined the need for reforming existing policy and regulatory frameworks to leverage public and private financing for the SDGs, and to contribute to sustainable development, including through local and regional capital markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are to succeed, today\u2019s discussions cannot be a one-off occurrence.
