{"id":24752,"date":"2017-03-28T14:54:32","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T14:54:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=24752"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:54:07","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:54:07","slug":"feature-humanity-at-the-core-as-un-readies-for-first-ever-ocean-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/03\/feature-humanity-at-the-core-as-un-readies-for-first-ever-ocean-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"FEATURE: Humanity at the core as UN readies for first-ever Ocean Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Over a year ago, on 20 February 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=53288\">Tropical Cyclone Winston<\/a> made a category 5 landfall along the north coast of Fiji&#8217;s largest, most populous island, Viti Levu, killing at least 44 people, and grounding flights to and from the Pacific Island nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the strongest cyclones to have hit any country in the Southern Hemisphere,\u201d recalls Mr. Semi Koroilavesau, Fijian Minister for Fisheries. \u201cThat was quite catastrophic for Fiji and we are still recovering from it,\u201d he adds, sombrely.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Koroilavesau was speaking recently at a panel discussion on the margins of the first preparatory meeting \u2013 convened by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/71\/\">President of the United Nations General Assembly <\/a>at the UN Headquarters in New York \u2013 for the first-ever <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanconference.un.org\/\">UN Ocean Conference<\/a>, to be co-hosted by the Governments of Fiji and Sweden, from 5 June to 9 June 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ocean is warming up and changing the pattern of our main product, which is tuna,\u201d said Mr. Koroilavesau underlining the significance of the ocean to the Fijian people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe migratory pattern has changed because of the conditions of the water. The degradation of the water is also depleting our resources and creating a lot of havoc in our ocean,\u201d he told the high-level panel, which included Peter Thomson, President of the UN General Assembly, Isabella L\u00f6vin, Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/development\/desa\/usg\/statements\/usg-wu.html\">Wu Hongbo<\/a>, UN Under-Secretary-General and head of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/en\/\">DESA<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiji has about 320 islands. Ocean is quite an important item to us both in our daily lives and\u2026 also as transportation between the islands,\u201d said Mr. Koroilavesau.<\/p>\n<p>In the run-up to the June Conference, four themes will shape the focus of the preparations that, according to the President of the UN General Assembly, \u201cwill lay the foundations upon which the Oceans Conference will stand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur efforts at this time and in the years ahead, will determine whether our children, and those who come after them, will know the joy and the sustenance of the oceans bounty that was provided to us in our youth. Let\u2019s not deny them that bounty,\u201d Mr. Thomson had said earlier, in a message that resonated strongly with the theme for the month of February, which is <em>People and Oceans<\/em>, with a focus on livelihoods, tourism, food security, maritime transport and trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you look at the declining fish stocks that are reaching a tipping point, or the ocean acidification level or whether you look at the level of plastics in our oceans, I think any sensible person can conclude that time is running out fast and we need to take action fast,\u201d said Mr. Thomson, during the preparatory meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SDG14 and the whole development agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo underlined the nexus between oceans and people, especially in the context of <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg14\">Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14<\/a>, which has to do with conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen we talk about SDG 14, we are thinking about navigation in the sea, we think about catching fish in the sea for food, we are thinking about doing tourism, but that is not all. Health of the sea and sustainable use of marine resources have a direct impact in the implementation of the many <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>,\u201d noted Mr. Wu, calling for voluntary commitments to implement Goal 14.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dsgHiT2GTE8?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p><strong>VIDEO<\/strong>: Ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in June 2017, UN chief of Economic and Social Affairs, Wu Hongbo says the Conference will be a \u2018game changer\u2019 and a chance for the international community to raise awareness about the importance of the oceans.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that SDG 14 is one of the vanguards for the whole Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, Mr. Wu also makes the connection between oceans and the goal to eliminate hunger. \u201cWe are actually receiving a lot of nutrition and the food from the sea so we have to protect the sea,\u201d said Mr. Wu.<\/p>\n<p>Besides food and nutrition, Mr. Wu pointed out the significant contribution of the ocean to people\u2019s overall wellbeing and in mitigating the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>The ocean and the sea are the natural regulator of our climate and they are good for sanitation,\u201d noted the UN Under-Secretary-General. \u201cPeople are saying that the oceans sink one third of greenhouse gas emission. If we lose the sea and oceans, just imagine what kind of situation we are going to have,\u201d warned Mr. Wu, who also made a connection between oceans, employment and economic growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I think the best or sustainable use of marine resources would really have a big boost to the economic growth and create a lot of jobs,\u201d said Mr. Wu.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24764\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/22-3-17oceans3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24764\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/22-3-17oceans3.jpg\" alt=\"Residents of Taveuni island in Fiji\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Residents of Taveuni island in Fiji helping to unload food rations that were delivered to affected villages in the south of the island. Photo: UNICEF\/ Sokhin<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Transformative commitments to drive Conference outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The outcomes of the Oceans Conference will, according to the President of the UN General Assembly, include a call to action and a conference report that will constitute the global body\u2019s work plan for implementing the SDG 14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must keep our vision clear. We must universalise our efforts. We must maintain the momentum towards the transformative commitments that will emerge from the Oceans Conference in June,\u201d underscored Mr. Thomson during the first preparatory meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Thomson places particular significance to the outcomes of the Ocean Conference which, he noted, would constitute \u201ca turning point in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the opportunity for any human being to be a part of the recovery of the ocean. For any human being who cares about the health of the ocean,\u201d said Mr. Thomson, during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Sweden\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Isabella L\u00f6vin sees the Ocean Conference as an opportunity to \u201cshare experiences, share best practices,\u201d she told the high-level panel. \u201cThis Ocean Conference will be the hub where we can actually share this knowledge, also transfer technology, and support developing countries so they will have access and the capacity to share the way that is needed for the oceans because the oceans connect us all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sUoYdWRVxHE?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p><strong>VIDEO<\/strong>: In preparation for June&#8217;s Ocean Conference that aims to help safeguard the planet&#8217;s oceans, UN General Assembly President said it\u2019s time to \u2018take action fast\u2019 and the June conference will be a \u2018turning point\u2019 in history for protecting the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. L\u00f6vin also expressed concerns about unsustainable exploitation of ocean resources and pollution, warning, \u201cIf these trends continue, with the overfishing, with more and more plastic pollution in our oceans, we will have more plastics than fish in our oceans by 2050.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like her fellow panellists, she made an urgent call to action. \u201cIt\u2019s really, really serious so this is what we have to do now in order to leave our planet with good conscious to our children and grandchildren,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cWe need to take action now and we can do it. We don\u2019t have any excuses for not doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UN has called for voluntary commitments to implement Goal 14 and established an online\u00a0commitment registry.
