Prime Minister <div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[Narendra] Modi calls it &#8221;development without destruction,&#8221; \u201d UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said after witnessing India becoming the 62nd country to deposit a legal instrument of ratification for the climate pact during a commemorative event on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/nonviolenceday\/index.shtml\">International Day of Non-Violence<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>India has chosen the International Day and the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the country&#8221;s independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence, to join the climate accord.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no better way to commemorate the great Mahatma Gandhi and his legacy of peace for people and planet,\u201d Mr. Eliasson said.<\/p>\n<p>The Agreement, which calls on countries to combat climate change and limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, will take effect 30 days only after at least 55 countries, responsible for 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, deposit their instruments of ratification.<\/p>\n<p>With today&#8221;s action by India, which accounts for 4.1 per cent of the emissions, the Agreement only needs slightly more than 3 percentage points to reach the remaining 55 per cent threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Also addressing the event was UN General Assembly President Peter Thomson, who said Gandhi would have been delighted to learn of India&#8221;s ratification, which brought the treaty&#8221;s entry into force \u201ctantalisingly\u201d close.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat this step, so full of hope and commitment, occurred on the anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi is especially fitting, given the Mahatma&#8221;s enduring ethical messages of humanism, environmentalism and pacifism,\u201d Mr. Thomson said.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2016-10-02\/statement-attributable-spokesman-secretary-general-ratification\">statement<\/a> issued by his spokesman, United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\">Secretary-General<\/a> Ban Ki-moon, who is visiting Switzerland, warmly congratulated India for ratifying and formally joining the Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndia&#8221;s leadership builds on the continued strong political momentum from Paris for urgent global action on climate change,\u201d the statement said. \u201cThe Secretary-General calls on all Parties to accelerate their domestic procedures in order to join the agreement as soon as possible this year. Action on climate change is crucial for achieving the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>) and creating a more prosperous, equitable and livable future for all people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adopted in Paris by the 195 Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (<a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/2860.php\">UNFCCC<\/a>) at a conference known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/cop21\/\">COP21<\/a> last December, the Agreement was signed in New York on 22 April this year by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/story.asp?NewsID=53756&amp;ampampKw1=Paris&amp;ampampKw2=&amp;ampampKw3=\">175 countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the UN General Assembly&#8221;s general debate, which ended 26 September, the number of countries that deposited their instruments of ratification reached 61, crossing one of the two thresholds required to bring it into force.
