{"id":17787,"date":"2016-06-08T18:19:28","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T18:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=17787"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:59:32","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:59:32","slug":"unaids-appoints-amfar-chair-and-fashion-designer-kenneth-cole-as-goodwill-ambassador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2016\/06\/unaids-appoints-amfar-chair-and-fashion-designer-kenneth-cole-as-goodwill-ambassador\/","title":{"rendered":"UNAIDS appoints amfAR chair and fashion designer Kenneth Cole as Goodwill Ambassador"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>7 June 2016 \u2013 The Joint UN Programme on HIV\/AIDS (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/\">UNAIDS<\/a>) today appointed the Chair of the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) and leading fashion designer Kenneth Cole as a UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are entering a crucial phase of the response to HIV and I know that Kenneth can make a significant and powerful contribution towards our shared vision of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030,\u201d said Michel Sidib\u00e9, the Executive Director of UNAIDS, speaking at a <a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/watch\/announcement-of-the-appointment-of-a-new-unaids-international-goodwill-ambassador-press-conference\/4930367974001\">press briefing<\/a> in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis commitment, compassion and resolve will magnify our efforts to include everyone and to ensure that no one is left behind,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made at a special event held on the eve of the three-day United Nations General Assembly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hlm2016aids.unaids.org\/index.php\/en\/home\/\">High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS<\/a>, which starts tomorrow at UN Headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>In his new role as an International Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS, Mr. Cole will work to rally the global community by continuing his longstanding role as an advocate for an inclusive response to the AIDS epidemic.<\/p>\n<p>He will help with the communication of clear benchmarks and goals in the AIDS response, including amfAR\u2019s mission of finding a cure for HIV by 2020, in order to realize UNAIDS\u2019 vision of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am confident that if people are put at the centre of the AIDS response we can realize one of this century\u2019s greatest humanitarian achievements \u2013 the end of the AIDS epidemic,\u201d said Mr Cole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am honoured by this appointment as a UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador. It is my hope to help intensify efforts to end the epidemic for everyone, everywhere,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cole has been a leading voice in the global response to AIDS for more than 30 years and continues to be a passionate champion for people living with HIV.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to managing his business interests, Mr. Cole has been chairman of amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research, since 2005. According to UNAIDS, he was instrumental in the launch of amfAR\u2019s Countdown to a Cure campaign, which supports amfAR\u2019s recently opened Institute for HIV Research, based at the University of California, San Francisco. The mission of the institute is to accelerate progress towards developing a cure for HIV.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the UN reported today that Thailand is the first Asian country to cross the threshold towards zero mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis, as well as being the first country with a large HIV epidemic to ensure an AIDS-free generation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thailand has turned around its epidemic and transformed the lives of thousands of women and children affected by HIV,&#8221; Mr. Sidib\u00e9 said, adding that &#8220;Thailand&#8217;s progress shows how much can be achieved when science and medicine are underpinned by sustained political commitment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Health of Thailand was presented with the certificate of validation during a ceremony which took place in New York on the eve of the UN General-Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThailand has demonstrated to the world that HIV can be defeated,\u201d Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of WHO\u2019s South-East Asia Region, said while presenting the certificate of validation.
