{"id":1449,"date":"2015-03-08T20:54:14","date_gmt":"2015-03-08T20:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:11:47","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:11:47","slug":"gender-equality-vital-for-world-to-fulfill-potential-ban-tells-thousands-at-womens-march-in-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/03\/gender-equality-vital-for-world-to-fulfill-potential-ban-tells-thousands-at-womens-march-in-new-york\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender equality vital for world to fulfill potential, Ban tells thousands at women&#8217;s march in New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Thousands of people gathered today in New York to march from United Nations headquarters to Times Square in commemoration of International Women&#8217;s Day and to demand greater efforts by Governments to achieve gender equality worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Among the many distinguished speakers who addressed marchers, the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, sounded a call for global action for women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you hold back half of our population, we cannot realise 100 per cent of our potential,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to fully respect and use the potential of all of our women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ban praised the commitment of those present to gender equality, saying women had to be \u201cfront and centre\u201d in the world, especially on issues like peace and development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProgress has been too slow; uneven,\u201d he said as he recalled that it was 20 years since the Beijing Declaration and sounding a rallying cry for the \u201cstep it up\u201d campaign to reach Planet 50:50 by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s our target. We must make it happen,\u201d he said. \u201cLet&#8217;s work to make it happen!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In her address to the gathered crowd, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Director-General of UN Women, stressed how rational equality is and the many benefits that stem from boosting the status of women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that when there is gender equality, girls and boys will go to school and they will prosper,\u201d she said. \u201cWe know that when there is gender equality there will be equal pay and poverty will be reduced. We know that when there is gender equality violence will come down and women will be able to live without being violated. We also know that where there is gender equality, our economies will grow, our development will be for everybody, because everybody will be participating.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eBAL3Sg56jc?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-2\"><p>Joining Mr. Ban and Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka on the platform were several other notables, including the Liberian peace activist, Leymah Gbowee and actor Paul Bettany.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Gbowee painted a vivid metaphor to describe the situation that persists in a world without gender quality, saying that by excluding the unique skills of women, global society was functioning \u201cwith one eye covered\u201d and that was hampering its progress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine trying to see the beauty of New York with one eye covered. Imagine trying to watch a beautiful movie with one eye covered. Imagine trying to get something done with one eye covered. Building peace, having development,\u201d she said. \u201cIt&#8217;s time for us to uncover the other eye, so that our world can function better. Gender equality all the way! Women&#8217;s empowerment all the way!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding his voice to calls for stepped-up efforts to improve equality and empower women, British actor Paul Bettany quoted shocking statistics about violence and abuse that girls and women face throughout their lives, including the fact that 70 per cent of women have experienced violent abuse from an intimate partner and that 120 million girls worldwide, each year experience sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere, in the US, over 80 per cent of girls in the eighth through 11th grades will experience sexual violence,\u201d he said. \u201cThat&#8217;s a statistic I can understand because I have a daughter and I can imagine what will likely befall eight out of 10 girls in her class.
