{"id":1434,"date":"2015-03-08T18:38:26","date_gmt":"2015-03-08T18:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=1434"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:11:48","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:11:48","slug":"on-international-womens-day-un-urges-more-action-to-achieve-gender-equality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/03\/on-international-womens-day-un-urges-more-action-to-achieve-gender-equality\/","title":{"rendered":"On International Women&#8217;s Day, UN urges more action to achieve gender equality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To mark International Women&#8217;s Day today, senior United Nations officials highlighted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments 20 years ago that set the agenda for realizing women&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<p>They noted that while much has been achieved since then in areas such as education, healthcare and the economy, many serious gaps remain, stressing that the UN will be in the forefront of efforts to highlight gender equality, holding a number of major events in the next week, including an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/in-focus\/international-womens-day\" target=\"_blank\">International Women&#8217;s Day<\/a> march from UN Headquarters to New York&#8217;s Times Square.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the annual, two-week long session of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/csw\/csw59-2015\" target=\"_blank\">Commission on the Status of Women<\/a>, opens tomorrow, on 9 March, and will bring representatives of UN Member States, civil society groups and UN entities together to take stock of where women stand today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must acknowledge that the gains have been too slow and uneven, and that we must do far more to accelerate progress everywhere,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/apps\/news\/infocus\/sgspeeches\/statments_full.asp?statID=2528#.VPyjE4HF-Vs\" target=\"_blank\">said UN Secretary-General<\/a> Ban Ki-Moon.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ban said that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/~\/media\/headquarters\/attachments\/sections\/csw\/pfa_e_final_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Beijing Conference<\/a> took place amid the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, which had prompted deserved attention to rape and other war crimes there against civilians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo decades later, with girls as young as seven not only targeted but used as weapons by violent extremists, it would be easy to lose heart about he value of international gatherings,\u201d he said, urging the world to come together in response to the targeting of women and girls by violent extremists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Nigeria and Somalia to Iraq and Syria, the bodies of women have been transformed into battlegrounds,\u201d he said. \u201cWomen have been attacked for trying to exercise their right to education and basic services they have been raped and turned into sex slaves they have been given as prizes to fighters, or traded among extremist groups in trafficking networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said outrage needed to be translated into meaningful action and, as women and girls are often the first targets of attack, their rights had to be at the centre of the global strategy to address the staggering and growing challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Noting also that women living in societies at peace remained targets of domestic abuse, female genital mutilation and other forms of violence that traumatise individuals and damage whole societies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiscrimination remains a thick barrier that must be shattered,\u201d Mr. Ban said. \u201cWe need to expand opportunities in politics, business and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eBAL3Sg56jc?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Mr. Ban&#8221;s call far <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/stories\/2015\/3\/executive-director-message-for-iwd-2015\" target=\"_blank\">action was echoed<\/a> by the Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, who said the world remained far away from achieving equality between men and women, boys and girls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot one single country has achieved equality,\u201d she said. \u201cit is even more urgent than ever that we define \u2013 and stick to \u2013 a time frame <div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\">[for doing so].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not enough changed in the 20 years since Beijing, she said, particularly in least-developed countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Africa, 70 per cent of crop production depends on women yet women still own only two per cent of the land\u201d she said. \u201cWomen need change and humanity needs change. This we can do together women and girls, men and boys, young and old, rich and poor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pointing out the \u201coverwhelming\u201d benefits that equality can bring, such as economic growth, poverty reduction, health status improvements and increased resilience to environmental and humanitarian crises, she stressed the importance of empowering women to empower humanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call on countries to &#8221;step it up&#8221; for gender equality, with substantive progress by 2020. Our aim is to reach &#8221;Planet 50:50&#8221; before 2030,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Mr. Ban and Ms. Mlambo-Ngcuka in calling for change was the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra&#8221;ad Al Hussein, who called for participation of women in all discussion of strategic responses to extremist violence, discrimination and to deprivation of all kinds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStates can seize this opportunity to go beyond lip service and towards gender equality \u2013 genuinely challenging and dismantling the power structures and dynamics which perpetuate discrimination against women,\u201d he said. \u201cAll of us, together: men, women, boys, girls \u2013 we all have to do this to eradicate gender discrimination.
