{"id":1384,"date":"2015-03-06T22:13:43","date_gmt":"2015-03-06T22:13:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=1384"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:11:51","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:11:51","slug":"ahead-of-global-risk-reduction-conference-un-review-finds-vast-majority-of-disasters-climate-related","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/03\/ahead-of-global-risk-reduction-conference-un-review-finds-vast-majority-of-disasters-climate-related\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahead of global risk reduction conference, UN review finds vast majority of disasters climate-related"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations office dedicated to disaster risk reduction today appealed to world leaders ahead of a major gathering in northern Japan next week to provide clear, action-oriented guidance to tackle the underlying drivers of risk, such as climate change, which now accounts for 87 per cent of the disasters that have killed some 700,000 people over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite many successes and greatly improved performance in disaster management, it is sobering to note that 700,000 people have died in disaster events over the last ten years,\u201d Margareta Wahlstr\u00f6m, head of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unisdr.org\/archive\/42862\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> issued today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA total of 1.7 billion people have had their lives disrupted in some way,\u201d Ms. Wahlstr\u00f6m said. \u201cIt is of great concern that economic losses in major reported disaster events come to $1.4 trillion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went on to explain that while 70 per cent of deaths are caused by earthquakes, climate-related disasters now account for over 80 per cent of all disaster events and contribute enormously to economic losses and short and long-term population displacement triggered by disaster events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is very important that the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction which opens on March 14, should provide clear, action-oriented guidance to governments, local governments, the private sector and civil society in general on how best to tackle the underlying drivers of risk such as poverty, climate change, poorly planned urban growth, land use and the decline of protective eco-systems,\u201d Ms. Wahlstr\u00f6m said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div id=\"attachment_1619\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/03-06-isdr-info-grphc.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1619\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1619\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/03-06-isdr-info-grphc.jpg\" alt=\"Source: UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1301\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of government leaders and civil society representatives will be gathering in the northern Japanese city of Sendai at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcdrr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction<\/a> from 14-18 March to broker the follow-up to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unisdr.org\/we\/coordinate\/hfa\" target=\"_blank\">Hyogo Framework for Action<\/a> (HFA), and chart a global course on disaster risk reduction for the coming decade.<\/p>\n<p>The Sendai conference is also the first landmark meeting of a particularly crucial year for the United Nations, which is set to lead the global development and climate agenda at a number of major international events: an international meeting in Paris in December on the adoption of a universal text on climate change;
