{"id":11737,"date":"2015-10-27T15:06:44","date_gmt":"2015-10-27T15:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=11737"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:03:38","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:03:38","slug":"un-climate-solutions-award-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/10\/un-climate-solutions-award-winners\/","title":{"rendered":"2015 Winners of UN Climate Solutions Awards Announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Projects From Across the Globe to be Honoured at UN Climate Conference in Paris<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sixteen game-changing initiatives from around the world were\u00a0announced today as winners of a prestigious United Nations climate change award.<\/p>\n<p>Winning activities include a seriously cool smartphone that puts social values first and an initiative that is\u00a0enabling 40 Latin American cities to take concrete climate action.<\/p>\n<p>Others include a women-led initiative in Benin that uses solar energy to empower women farmers and an\u00a0internal carbon fee that holds the business units of one of the world\u2019s most famous software and ICT\u00a0companies financially responsible for reducing their carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/unfccc.int\/secretariat\/momentum_for_change\/items\/6214.php\">Momentum for Change initiative<\/a> is spearheaded by the UN Climate Change secretariat to shine a light on\u00a0some of the most innovative, scalable and replicable examples of what people are doing to address climate\u00a0change. Today\u2019s announcement is part of wider efforts to mobilize action and ambition as national\u00a0governments work toward adopting a new universal climate agreement in Paris.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-vimeo\" style=\"--awb-max-width:800px;--awb-max-height:467px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.38%;\" ><iframe title=\"Vimeo video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/78705262?autoplay=0&amp;autopause=0\" width=\"800\" height=\"467\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWith less than 35 days to go until the climate change conference in Paris, the Momentum for Change\u00a0Lighthouse Activities are further compelling proof that climate action is building worldwide and in countries,\u00a0communities, companies and cities everywhere,\u201d UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy\u00a0showcasing these remarkable solutions and the people behind them we can strengthen efforts toward that new\u00a0agreement, accelerate the global transition to a low-carbon, highly resilient development path and mark a\u00a0turning point in the sustainable management of planet Earth for the seven billion alive today and the ten\u00a0billion by 2050.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each of the 16 winning activities touches on one of Momentum for Change\u2019s four focus areas: Urban Poor,\u00a0Women for Results, Financing for Climate Friendly Investment and ICT Solutions. All 16 will be showcased\u00a0at a series of special events during the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, France (30 November to 11\u00a0December).<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 Momentum for Change Lighthouse Activities are:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> Urban Poor<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>E-waste: From Toxic to Green | India: Creating jobs to keep e-waste out of landfills<\/li>\n<li>Solvatten Solar Safe Water Heater | Kenya: Reducing emissions while securing access to safe drinking\u00a0water<\/li>\n<li>Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative | Latin America &amp; the Caribbean: Supporting sustainable\u00a0growth in emerging cities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Women for Results<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fostering Cleaner Production | Colombia: Reducing emissions in manufacturing<\/li>\n<li>Harvesting Geothermal Energy | El Salvador: Generating income with geothermal waste-heat<\/li>\n<li>Planting Trees to Save the Mangrove | Guinea: Establishing women-led groups that protect forests and\u00a0generate income<\/li>\n<li>SELF\u2019s Solar Market Gardens | Benin: Empowering women farmers through solar drip irrigation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">F<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">inancing for Climate Friendly Investment<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Azuri PayGo Energy | Africa: Innovating pay-as-you-go energy systems for rural homes<\/li>\n<li>Deforestation-free Cocoa | Peru: Using a carbon-asset-backed loan to protect forests and produce cocoa<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Global Carbon Fee | Global: Transforming corporate culture by putting a price on carbon<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ICT Solutions<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ChargePoint Electric Vehicle Charging Corridors | United States of America: Building a network of<br \/>\nelectric vehicle express charging stations<\/li>\n<li>Enabling Farmers to Adapt to Climate Change | Uganda: Using ICT solutions to build resilience<\/li>\n<li>Fairphone | The Netherlands: Producing a phone that improves lives and the environment<\/li>\n<li>Lifelink Water Solutions | Kenya and Uganda: Using ICT tools to provide safe, sustainable and\u00a0affordable water<\/li>\n<li>Mapping Exposure to Sea Level Rise | Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu and Papua New Guinea: Preparing\u00a0for risk with online spatial tools<\/li>\n<li>Mobisol Smart Solar Homes | Rwanda and Tanzania: Powering homes with solar energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 2015 Lighthouse Activities were selected by an international advisory panel as part of the secretariat\u2019s\u00a0Momentum for Change initiative, which is implemented with the support of the Bill &amp;
