In fact, according to the United Nations Environmental Programme, <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/5-key-drivers-nature-crisis\">human activity is pushing one million species of plants and animals towards extinction<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/cop15-ends-landmark-biodiversity-agreement\">This is the largest loss of life since the dinosaurs.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Nature is declining at an unprecedented rate<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111155 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-66x66.jpeg 66w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-200x200.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-300x300.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-400x400.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-600x600.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-800x800.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/final-build-back-biodiversity-en.jpeg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/>With species biodiversity and nature declining at an unprecedented rate, extinction is a very real possibility for many life forms on our current track. Species which we might seem to have vast numbers of are at risk, including <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2022\/08\/1123872#:~:text=It%20may%20be%20surprising%20to%20learn%20that%20giraffes%2C%20parrots%2C%20and,back%20some%201.6%20billion%20years.\">giraffes, oak trees, parrots, cacti and even seaweed.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This loss of biodiversity threatens every life on earth, not just those species which are close to extinction. Fish provide <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/cep\/events\/un-day\/international-day-biological-diversity-2023#:~:text=Fish%20provide%2020%20per%20cent,based%20medicines%20for%20basic%20healthcare.\">20 per cent of animal protein to about 3 billion people. Over 80 per cent of the human diet is provided by plants. As many as 80 per cent of people<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> living in rural areas in developing countries rely on traditional plant\u2010based medicines for basic healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/news\/Media-Release-Global-Assessment\">Global Assessment Report<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,found that \u2018<\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipbes.net\/news\/Media-Release-Global-Assessment\">around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, many within decades. This ismore than ever before in human history<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">\u2019<\/span>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With this in mind,the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in December 2022 (or COP15)ended with a global agreement to halt this degradation with the adoption of the <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/gbf\/\">Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework <\/a><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/gbf\/\">(GBF)<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> outlining worldwide actions to be taken to secure our life support system.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Report identifies the following five key drivers of the nature crisis:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Changes in land and sea use<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">:<\/span> The ways in which we use land and sea have huge impacts on biodiversity. Changing the way we utilise them can relieve the pressure on ecosystems. Agriculture alone is a threat to <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/5-key-drivers-nature-crisis\">85 per cent of the 28,000 species at risk of extinction.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Climate change<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">:<\/span> Rising global temperatures could threaten <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/5-key-drivers-nature-crisis\">as many as one in six species at the global level<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Pollution<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">:<\/span> Air, soil and water pollution are on the rise globally, and reducing this while managing chemicals and waste is key to combating the nature crisis. In addition, the use of pesticides are the <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/5-key-drivers-nature-crisis\">main cause of plant and insect decline<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Direct exploitation of natural resources<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">:<\/span> Preventing and reversing the <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/5-key-drivers-nature-crisis\">degradation of <\/a><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/5-key-drivers-nature-crisis\">land and oceans can prevent the loss of one million endangered species<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">.<\/span> Through their spiritual relationship with land, indigenous people are recognised as the guardians of biodiversity. In many parts of the world, Indigenous People are at the forefront of conservation, as noted by <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/report.territoriesoflife.org\/about-this-report\/\">Territories of Life<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> &#8211; a report in part supported by UNEP.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>Invasive species<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #046b99\">:<\/span> Invasive Alien Species are those which have begun to grow outside of their usual habitat. They can cause the decline, or even extinction of the native species in these environments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><b>We face a huge challenge, but we have a roadmap<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-111157 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-66x66.png 66w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-400x400.png 400w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-800x800.png 800w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/act-now-life-on-land-en.png 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/>Sustainable Development Goal 15 \u2018Life on Land\u2019 aims to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal15\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<span style=\"color: #046b99\">Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> It strives to safeguard our Earth\u2019s natural areas so humans, and other species can continue to enjoy them through future generations.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The landmark <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/article\/cop15-cbd-press-release-final-19dec2022\">UN Biodiversity Agreement<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> contains <\/span><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/article\/cop15-final-text-kunming-montreal-gbf-221222\">23 action based targets<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to be reached by 2030 to pave the way for further targets to be achieved by 2050.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #046b99\"><a style=\"color: #046b99\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/cop15-ends-landmark-biodiversity-agreement\">To fund these goals, the Global Environment Facility will set up a Special Trust Fund \u2013 the GBF Fund to ensure adequate, timely flow of funds from developed countries to developing countries.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is vital that we achieve these targets within the timescale in order to protect biological diversity, while developing as a planet. As United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Executive Director, Inger Andersen, said: \u201cSuccess will be measured by our rapid and consistent progress in implementing what we have agreed to.
