To achieve them, it will take not just actions from governments, but from businesses, civil society and ordinary citizens. In this portrait series, we wanted to highlight how remarkable individuals are already making a difference towards achieving these goals, showing that no action is too small. I can now carry up to 120 kilograms. My income has risen by at least three-fold.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Khagisara, Nepal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Khagisara started to grow and sell vegetables to provide for her family after her husband passed away, but with a bad leg, it was difficult for her to carry around her vegetables. Two years ago, she received a bicycle and crates to carry vegetables, as well as entrepreneurship training from the government of Nepal and the <a href=\"http:\/\/undp.org\">UN Development Programme<\/a>. Since then, things started to change for the better.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Poverty\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/poverty\/\"><strong>Goal #1<\/strong><\/a> aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. For her, going to school has become a passion.\u00a0She is enthusiastic and remembers her lessons quickly. She wants to become a nurse in the future. But before the World Food Programme\u2019s school meal program, Korka\u2019s family simply couldn\u2019t afford her education. &#8220;Now that Korka eats every day at school, I can worry less. Without the meals, it would be hard for us to have her stay at school,\u201d says Korka\u2019s grandmother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a title=\"Hunger and food security\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/hunger\/\"><strong>Goal #2<\/strong> <\/a>aims to end hunger and all kinds of malnutrition. I worked as a surgical nurse for 18 years and as a \u2018bagh feldsher\u2019 (a government health worker who provides essential services for nomadic herder communities) for 10 years before becoming a vaccinator.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>P. Oyunchimeg, measles and rubella vaccinator, Mongolia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every year, P. Oyunchimeg and her team of vaccinators undergo a lengthy journey that involves traveling by car, hand-drawn ferry, reindeer and foot to vaccinate children from remote nomadic herder communities.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Health\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/health\/\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Goal #3 <\/strong><\/a>aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. I wanted to learn new skills.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mohmed, Somalia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like many young men in his village, Mohmed didn\u2019t have many plans for his future. A lack of education and opportunities led many young Somalis into conflict and piracy. However, after taking vocational training at the UN Development Programme\u2019s Alternative Livelihood to Piracy program, Mohmed is now excited to take on a different journey in his life.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Education\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/education\/\"><strong>Goal<\/strong><strong> #4<\/strong><\/a> aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. Today, being a mother of two, Hawa has managed to stay in school and dreams of going on to college.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/gender-equality\/\"><strong>Goal #5<\/strong> <\/a>aims to achieve gender equality. They told me that being a woman, and on top of that, being very young would not work for a parliamentarian. But I decided to continue. And now I can see that being a young woman is an opportunity and not an obstacle. Now I am very much respected for the work I do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Gra\u00e7a, President of the Network of Women Parliamentarians, Cabo Verde<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the age of 30, Gra\u00e7a became one of the youngest Members of Parliament in her country. As a returnee to his home country after decades, he no longer has a support network to lean on. To provide support to the returnees and the villagers from the host communities, the World Food Programme started offering vouchers to participants in asset-building projects. Along with 1,000 people, Richard built a 7km road in only three months. In return, he received vouchers to buy food locally.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Peace and justice\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/peace-justice\/\"><strong>Goal #16<\/strong><\/a> aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
